It depends on your insurance policy. However, in almost all cases the answer is no, you have no coverage. If you do have coverage, the insurance company may take action to recover costs from the unlicensed person.
And in almost all states, simply allowing an unlicensed person to drive a vehicle is illegal. If there are any other damages to other people or vehicles, your son could be facing additional charges if he knew the person was unlicensed and let him take the car anyway.
This also brings up the question of the police. Were they contacted about the accident? Without a police report, our insurance company will request that be done before they do anything. Without it, they have no information to go on. If it was reported, what was their response?
You are probably going to need to pay yourself for the damage, and have a long talk with your son about insurance and responsibility. It sounds like he needs to park the car until he understands that it is not a toy, but a deadly weapon.

If the person was driving with the knowledge and permission of you or your son.... No.
And insurance companies are not known for overlooking ANY infringement of their rules.
policies do not cover unlicenced people people driving - even with your permission.
they would only cover a person on a learners permit with explicit limited insurance, declared in advance.
You have no claim

it may be covered and it may not. but i bet the insurance company will cancel your or his policy and the only insurance he will be able to get is risk insurance and that will cost at least double what he is paying for now.

Covered??? Sure!
In trouble??? You bet!!
If it was MY son who did that, the NEXT car and insurance that he used would be bought and paid for by HIM.

I would check with your insurance company - some policies cover other people driving your cars.
But most don't.
