please try and pick a best answer instead of putting it to the vote ..
or if you go to vote please try and look for the best answer

the voting system is just wrong
I just got picked for best answer for not knowing the answer , when others obviously put a lot of thought into the answer
this isn't the first time it has happened , because people just click on the first answer they see to earn themself points

but this does two things
it encourages people to try and get that top spot because they know it has a better chance of being picked , even if it is wrong
so they point game for it
and it also isn't fair on people genuinly looking for an answer to their questions .... they get misleading/wrong answers in voting

does this irritate anyone else ?
I feel bad for even having those points

I personally do let some go to the vote if I find it difficult to choose an answer
but I am starting to see that this is not always for the best
but i think it is more important that we encourage people to choose a good answer

I'm with Jonjon, I give point-gamers a thumbs down also. Thanks for the reminder, Pangel, let's hope people listen.

*Pangel, I find that my kids come in handy when I'm having difficulty picking best answer. I just turn the results over to them and they choose for me. Before submitting their selection I have to approve it, and so far they've done a fine job. At 15 and 12 they're old enough to help with this. Since I ask mainly for opinions, sometimes having discussions over various answers really helps us to learn something.

It is frustrating. I never send questions to vote, but I hardly ever answer questions. It's also frustrating when people pick best answers that aren't really answering the question, but more agreeing with their viewpoint. Why direct a question towards someone who believes something different than you if you don't care about their answer?

Anyway, you're right, the voting system can be a bit messed up. Whenever I vote (which is rarely, I only do it if I'm bored and have reached my answer limit for the day) I try to take time and read all the answers fairly and unbiasedly.

Thanks for your thoughts!

I usually pick a best answer unless it's just too hard. That does seem a rather silly one to have given you the best answer for... but aren't there some answers where it worked the other way? Some completely moronic answer got BE while something you put a lot of thought into was ignored? It all comes out in the wash.

I always read through the answers and pick the best answer. I have noticed that the first answer usually gets the most attention. And, it does irritate me sometimes when I see some really good answers and they never get picked because they are near the bottom of the page. Don't feel bad for getting those points, its not like you intentionally did anything.

I agree. I always pick best answer (or no best answer if none of them really work for me). I don't think that we should have a voting system. It brings people here just to earn points, that don't really care about the questions being asked. --I know this is obviously not going to change, so when I vote for best answer I read each answer thoroughly before choosing best(or none of the best)answers. I think that it is important to give credit and thanks where it is due.

Yeah, it's annoying. There are so many people who ask the questions and never go back to them. I have some questions in my answered collection from a year ago that are up for a vote now. That's ridiculous.
I admit, I have gotten some cheap points because of this voting system.

I'm with you 100%. And here's an idea, if people are finding it difficult to choose a best answer, they should specify that they are letting it go for a vote.

But here's the most annoying thing, someone types in say "a" just to secure the top spot, and then they edit it into a proper answer, aaaaaaaaargh!!!

Peace

I generally try to do the best answer. I think on one occasion I put the question to vote.
For the most part if I cant pick a best answer because they are so horribly bad answers I delete the question. :) Done that a few times. These are generally questions in which I ask something genuine and either I get "pray for it" or "I don't know" or "you're baiting us"

I do sooooo agree!
Apart from any other consideration, it seems just plain rude.

I don't play games on here - though I might occasionally play the fool. When we ask real questions I think we have a duty to choose the most helpful answer, rather than leave it to a capricious vote.

Gimme the points. Gimme the points. I want the POINTS.

I will try to more often.
If there is an answer that stands out to me I do choose it but sometimes I ask a question and get repeated versions of the same answer so I let them vote because none stand out to me.

I know! I asked a lot of questions on Friday and went out of town and didn't make it home till today and i was going to pick best answer but yahoo already moved them to voting =/
sometimes its not the persons fault, but I still understand what you are saying!!!

Have a good day!
