avg hand down.
First its free
Second macafee uses way too many computer cycles. its notorious for bogging down your system and doesn't really do any better than avg.
Accept that neither AVG or macafee are 100% effective at finding viruses, test show that both miss some nasties in various tests. So why bother paying for imperfect protection when you can get it free.

AVG somtimes cannot fix certain infected files, so it gives you an option to delete the file. This seems a good thing at first, but if the file is something important like an .exe your computer problems have just begun. I had a friend that had a virus that only infected .exe files and she used AVG to clean her computer up. Unaware of the repercussions, she promptly deleted all the infected files. Her computer became pretty much useless, almost all her programs would no longer work.
So if I had only 2 choices, then Macafee would be my choice, once I learned to spell it right.

I have used both in the past as well as Symantec Antivirus. When asked by people what antivirus I recommend I always say AVG...the Free wersion that is. You can download it here:
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/
AVG also makes commercial versions and products but its free edition is by far the best free antivirus package out there.
It picks up trojans and viruses that McAfee has missed in the past and its user interface is very simple to use and operate. The built in email scanner is great and its resident shield is second-to none (you would think I work for them!)
Anyway go for AVG free and make sure you also use your firewall along with your antivirus.

McAfee would be the better choice here since it has more security options and offers much more security than AVG. Although AVG is a good FREE program to fend off against viruses.

All the geeks I used to work with all used AVG. I think that tells you something. I use roadrunner's free one that you get - but if I didn't, I'd use AVG....it's very simple, does it's job and doesn't take over your computer.

AVG is better than mcafee. I say this because i have used both and mcafee failed to protect me from viruses on a few occassions.
