That is a really small budget, however I understand the need for a surround system. So if you already have a decent receiver the speakers below are a great start around $399. You could also look at pawn shops and e-bay for used equipment.

If you don't have a receiver stay away from a HTIB. Save up and get the real thing. I posted a link to a great entry level receiver as well.

Stay away form Bose, the cheap speakers below sound much better than anything they have. Get quality interconnects and a power conditioner to protect it all and you are in business.

Good luck.

Hi there. What type of speaker sound do you prefer. Unfortunately speakers add their own sound (colouration) to the sound from the power amp that they try to produce. Basically speakers can be divided into 3 categories. Those that have a bright sound that favour the high frequencies. Those that have a mid frequency prominence (a forward sound especially emphasising the human voice) and speakers that treat all the frequencies the same ,the so called neutral speaker. This last lot is usually more expensive due to the difficulty of creating a flat response over the full frequency range the speaker has to reproduce.

Here are a few to consider

I have always been a fan of phillips home theatre systems. For the price they seem to deliver the best sound quality out of all the systems I have tried/owned. And as stated by others Bose makes some really nice systems, but they generally come with a high price tag.

I'd recommend Sherwood brand speakers. A site I like to shop at called http://www.better-shop.com , carries various brands of home theater products. You should check them out. If they do not have it, they will do their best to find it for you, if you ask them. Atleast, they did that for me. Good luck.
