I think I was having an allergic reaction to the post surgery tape they used in combination with my stitches. I have red bumps and it was painful itchy... to the point where I had to rip it off... What is in tape that can cause the reaction. I have never been allergic to anything. I do go to the doctor today... but has anyone had a reaction like this before?

Latex! Latex allergies may occur suddenly. My students once wrapped a student "victim" up in sports-medicine tape without checking for latex content, and I had to take the "victim" to a hospital, where she became a real victim. Latex allergies may start as mild symptoms, then progress without warning to anaphylaxis, which is life-threatening. Please tell your healthcare providers, co-workers, school nurse, etc. that you probably have a latex allergy.

You bet it can. Tape adhesive is a chemical and therefore can create a reaction simply by the nature of skin sensitivity. A full out allergy would have more swelling and itching. This is a mild reaction but should be treated. Wash the area with warm water and baking soda to soothe the skin. Leave it exposed to the air for now. You could get caladryl lotion, what they use for poison ivy, but unless it's a bad reaction that won't be necessary. It could simply be a contact reaction and once you remove the offender it should subside. It should be better within hours and mostly gone after a day or so.

Possible you are allergic to that particular tape. You can try different types so you know which ones you are allergic to. Sometimes, it's not allergy, it's the way the type is place and stretches the skin. But your doctor would be able to differentiate that.

[personally? no, i've not had such a reaction. at least not yet.]

BUT.... at any age, at any time,
one can develop allergies.

I have had certain food allergies develop after eating the same thing for years. I became allergic to a medication after using it before. It sounds to me that you very well could be allergic to LATEX. You'll know soon enough, if you keep touching such things.

Sorry, I know how you feel. God bless.

I'm not sure if this is in surgical tape- but you might be reacting to Latex, which is used in a lot of plastics and medical supplies.

If you have a reaction to latex, especially, this is really possible.
