Ketchup is used as a condiment on things for extra flavour, like on french fries, scrambled eggs, hot dogs etc, while tomato sauce is often combined with other ingredients, spices, chopped veggies etc to be used as a base sauce like on pizzas, pastas etc...for example tomato sauce would be good used with pasta but not so good with fries, while ketchup would be good on fries but not so good with pasta....get some of each and try experimenting with them and you'll see what I mean....happy cooking!

If you're talking about the difference between Aussie Tomato Sauce and Ketchup as said above, it's the vinegar in Ketchup. Simply go to a major supermarket and they would usually have both and compare the ingredients. Technically of course Ketchup is a Type of Tomato Sauce, which is why a lot of Aussies are so adamant that Ketchup is the same stuff as the Australian type. The history apparently has something to do with the ingredients available at the time to mass produce, not far from the difference between Bourbon and Scotch (Corn vs Barley).

Ketchup usually contains either tomato paste or tomato sauce.

The difference is really in ingredients. Plain old tomato sauce is very limited in ingredients, unless you buy one of the flavored ones (basil and garlic for instance). It can have salt, usually has preservatives, maybe a little seasoning but it is essentialy cooked down tomatoes.

Ketchup, however, has vinegar, lots of sugar (well, probablyhigh fructose corn syrup) and a world of other spices. That's why Heinz and Hunts taste so different and are such a different consistency.

Their uses are also differnt. Tomato sauce is usually an ingredient. Ketchup is usually a condiment, although there are some recipes (like meat loaf) that use it as an ingredient.

Tomato ketchup is your everyday of tom, dick and harry where you can get it at convenient store and added a lot of artificial flavor to your food.

But it is a different story with tomato sauce, it is a beautiful sauce which you take good delight in preparing it. You add not only tomato but your heart and soul into preparing your tomato sauce, a sauce which you can share happily with your family and friends as other home cooked food.

Beside, anyone will really appreciate tomato sauce but ketchup, well it is always the same taste.

What Karen said. Tomato ketchup has more sugars and a sweeter taste. Tomato sauce has more of a natural flavor to go with pasta and stuff. But I think sometimes tomato sauce has chucks of meat, tomatoes, etc. Tomato ketchup never does.

1 clove garlic, minced
1/2 teaspoon dried basil or 2 Tbsp chopped fresh basil
1 28 oz. can whole tomatoes, including the juice, or 1 3/4 pound of fresh tomatoes, peeled, seeded, and chopped
1 teaspoon tomato paste
Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

The Food and Drug Adimistration has quite a lengthly discription of what makes up ketchup and what makes up tomato sauce. It's too long to show here, but the link below will take you right to it if you care to read it for yourself.

tomato ketchup has more sugars and has a sweeter flavor to make it taste good on hamburgers, hotdogs, eggs, etc. tomato sauce doesn't have as many sugars and has more of an earthy taste to go over pastas and the such.
