Depending what engine is in your Probe Ford has a couple of TSBs addressing the concern. Many shops and parts store have access to All-data or other information system and could print them off for you. The TSB numbers are 97-17-14 and 97-17-13. If your Probe has a 2.5 liter 4 cylinder TSB 97-17-13 is a repair procedure for the rear cam drive gear friction spring replacement, what is happening is the cam drive gear is loose and rattles, this repair seems to be quit effective at eliminating the noise.

Ticking is not cause by the cam. Have the shop do a valve adjustment and have them check the fuel injectors.

I doubt that the ticking you are hearing is from the cam. It's usually a pretty good indicator that massive engine failure is iminent if the motor itself is ticking. I would have a professional diagnose it ASAP. If it's a '94 I'm gussing it's high miles and it might be at the end of the road. Cam's aren't somthing you can just adjust.

a cam can not be adjusted.. try a heavier oil and a rebuild...get shop manual if u insist on taking it apart to see what makes it "tick"

Pedro offers good advice. Try 20w 50 oil and see if it helps. It may be a valve. If it doesn't help you may have a small exhaust leak which will get louder over time
