I have a department luncheon tomorrow at a golf resort restaurant. I have been invited, but am only a summer intern. I've decided to go, since I declined to attend one last summer. What should I expect? Who pays: me or the company? The company is a power company with a 'business casual' dress code, if that helps. Thanks!

Always attend these things - it's a time to shake hands, see and be seen, etc. You won't be an intern forever, darling. These contacts can help you later on.

Usually the company pays for lunch if it's a company sponsored event. But bring some cash just in case.

Wear something the boss would wear - It doesn't hurt to dress better than you think you should.

Smile. Shake hands. Be genuinely glad to meet people. Ask questions, Thank your boss for inviting you.

Drink non-alcoholic drinks - even if there's an open bar. It's just really good policy to stay sober around colleagues and bosses - especially at company-sponsored events. Ginger ale with a cherry looks like a "real" drink.

Unless the menu is planned, order the grilled chicken or salmon. Eat slowly. Chew with your mouth closed.

Company pays!
Have a nice time, introduce yourself to folks you don't know, perhaps ask them what they do at the company, how long they've worked there, just business small-talk. When the event is over, be certain to thank your supervisor (or whoever extended the invite to you), either in person, by note, or email. Just be polite and gracious, and observe the behavior of others (especially those with responsibility).
What a treat!

The company will pay. Expect basically a casual affair with business undertones. Dress nice, but comfortable.

Barbara has the right answers. Just a few of my own observations:

Never discuss 'hot' topics,e.g., war, religion

Never discuss personal stuff

Conversations s/b light or business related

DO NOT DRINK alcohol - ginger with cherry sounds good, I used to have soda water (or any bubbly water) with lime or lemon - looks like G & T.

Avoid anyone tipsy

Don't eat green salads/cottage cheese - get stuck in your teeth

My guess is the company will pay, but it never hurts to be prepared. I would think, male or female, nice slacks and a nice shirt would work.
