If you know someone personally, it is very kind to pay them a visit. Gifts are nice, but it is really the one on one interaction that makes them feel so much better. If they are on chemotherapy they don't want to go out. It isn't because they don't want to, it is because they are afraid of infection which will prolong the treatment.. and they want it over with!! They want to get back to a normal life. Getting a diagnosis of cancer is very shocking and it is nice to have some normalcy. It is very thoughtful of you to think about this.

You could volunteer time in a hospital ~ maybe request that particular area ~ Donate blood ~ there is always a shortfall on blood it seems ~ you could always contact a hospice and see if they could use a volunteer. Maybe reading to a patient, some grocery shopping etc ~ Check online to see if there is a cancer facility in your neighborhood ~ call them to see how you could help~ Maybe donate some books ~ magazines ~

Check an area hospital ~ maybe make arrangements to visit with children ~ play time ~

Praying for them, sending them a note with some flowers or a card with a grocery store gift certificate in it (cancer can be financially draining as well as physically and emotionally draining)...cook or bake for them...visit them just to talk and let them know how much you care about them...

Be supportive! I was diagnosed with Ovarian cancer in 2001. Some of things I really appreciated were my friends who helped with meals and laundry. Small notes of prayer, inspiration or hope. Picking up prescriptions, driving me to chemo, sitting with me while I cried or thew up. Every effort helps!

I'm a 12 year OVCA survivor. Some things I really appreciated were:

Meals prepared for my family

Taking my kids to the movies to give me extra sleep time

Household & yard chores

Letting me express my fears

Making me laugh ~ what I believe healed me!

Keep in touch with anyone you know. It's amazing how fast people forget that you exist if you are homebound.
