Why is this?
And if the reason is that they need the females for good breeding stock ...can't she still work and breed?

As a K-9 handler I've seen many a female canine used which are just as good as the male canine!

Of course, I can see the breeder keeping the females more often for production of more litters for economic reasons.

My own kennel master/trainer does work her female dogs...but because of the stress of the police work....not while breeding!

Best wishes.

I have worked with animals before and I can assure you that if they are using mostly male dogs then there is a financial reason behind it. Either they do the job better, they cost less over their useful lifetime, or something like that. It is not an ERA issue. When people are using animals this way, they want the most bang for the buck. It's true of any animal use including food animals, sport animals, and any others where money is a consideration.

As long as they do the job, why does it matter? Is the National Organization of Women going to sue on behalf of under-represented female canines in law enforcement? Why stop there? I've never seen a pug or a shiz-tsu working a K9 detail either. So not only are the police discriminating based on sex, but on skin color, national origin and heritage as well!

*gasp* What would Jesse Jackson say about this? Why isn't CNN covering this story?

I don't buy the "females aren't aggressive" thing. We have a female police dog, and she is probably the most aggressive.

They won't breed female police dogs (they are usually spade). Police dogs are expensive to train and maintian and need to be available at any time. My police service is relatively small so we can't afford to have a dog "out of commission" because of pregnancy.

The female un -spayed dog can be in estrus and that can cause confusion . Female dogs have just as much stamina as males and often more bulk and size.Equal intelligence too.
Females are the most aggressive in the human chain. they are the most vicious and commit extremely heinous crimes....Seen it far too often for it too not be fact

male dogs are more agressive and will track scent better femal dogs tend to just want to protect there own pack male dogs will rush in to a situation without giving it much thought were as a female will evaluate the dangers involved

Female dogs go into heat.

It's not an ERA issue here. It's just practicality.

Male dogs have more testosterone in them which makes them ideal to "hunt" and be aggressive to male crimminal and females...

And the females potentially attract males - I mean imagine if you were looking for drug kingpin and a labrador or pitbull comes and gives the "wham, bam, thank you ma'am"...

I think it too the police force are sexist in a way, even in the animal world...

(And thanks for the two points...)

if you have noticed that the police force doesnt have very many females on it anyways. but i think the men think its a manly job and strong women cant handle a "man". so i would say samething with a dog.....but then why is a female dog called a bytch?
