All airlines have time limits on claiming travel miles for credit, often it's only a few months. If you have not already claimed miles from years past, they are gone forever. If you already have a frequent flier number with them you can call and see what they can do, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Your best bet for a cheap airfare is to fly during the off season. Rates right now are very high because it's the summer season, if you go in October for example they might be 20-40% less. Otherwise try a few search engines like Travelocity or Expedia, and then go to the actual airline websites to see if you can do better. Play with your travel dates a couple of days either way and that can often help too.

You can either upgrade a ticket or you can get what they call award travel which is basically free (plus taxes and fees), but you can't use miles to get a discount. It's also very unlikely you will be able to get an award anytime soon, you usually need to call many months ahead of the time you want to go and sometimes almost a year ahead of time. If you have a lot of frequent flyer miles it can't hurt to call the airline and ask, good luck.
