This is a good question, so a star from me. Trust is something that is earned or to put it another way it grows over time as a result of peoples actions. There is more to it than that though...if you are able to relate to the person from just a short contact then you may give them trust earned by association to a type in your head. What I mean is sometimes you can tell that someone is trustworthy because they push all the right buttons in your mind (sub-conscience) and you give them credit that is equivalent to years of trustworthy treatment. I know people who do something really crazy, they take the above one step further and superimpose a type on a stranger because they want to trust them. They "fool" themselves into thinking that they can trust this stranger because they really want to trust this person, these are the people that con-artists seek out and make a good living off. EXAMPLE: You want to trust a person who tells you you just won $10,000 in a beauty contest, even though you know you have never entered a beauty contest. You want to think of yourself as beautiful and you want the $10,000 so you are willing to lower a few barriers for this person who says they are there to give you the winnings. My advice is never give your trust before it is earned and never withhold your trust because someone has betrayed you in the past, everyone deserves an equal chance to disappoint you. There is also some good advice about specific issues in the other answers.
