I went fishing the other day and I was thinking to myself, can I justify doing this as a sport? I mean, it would be ok if I was eating the fish but I'm not. It's a bit disturbing as some of them swalloed the hook and I had to get it out. Even killing the maggots is a little bit horrific. Is it ok to do this as a sport?

It has been studied that a properly caught and released fish survives just fine. Fish guarding egg nests will return to the nest in less than an hour of being released.

In the event that a fish swallows a hook, simply cut the line as close to the hook as possible. Again, studies have proven that the hook will work it's way out in a short period of time and the fish suffers little if any damage at all. At the PA fishing expo a few years ago, they intentionally left hooks in the fish at the beginning of the expo. Most of the hooks were found on the floor of the tank by the end of the weekend. The others took a little longer but eventually fell out.

Personally, I think it is ok but it's a decision that you have to make for yourself. You do put the animal's life at risk and that is not something that everyone is comfortable with. While I am ok with fishing, I never even consider hunting.

It's alright man. Think about it this way, when a fish is born, it's worst enemy is it's own species because they eat their own. In other words, big trout will eat little trout. But if the hook is down in their throat, I wouldn't try getting it out. The fist will have better luck if you just cut the line as close as possible. Catch and release is how I fish and there's nothing wrong with it. And if you do take home the fish, as long as you don't let the meat go to waste, there's nothing wrong with that either. Keep going, you'll get over it.

I don't think it's that bad of a thing. I mean, it's more entertainment or a form of relaxation for most of us. I have no problem whatsoever putting a worm on a hook. It's something that has been done for ages. You're actually being conservative when you catch and release your fish. Some people swear by catch and release, while others fish for the meat. I guess it's all up to personal opinion, but to me, there's nothing morally or ethically wrong with fishing.

I do carp fishing regulary and do all I can to make sure the carps safety and welfare come first, but I do sometimes start thinking how weird and possible wrong it is.

Even if you are going to eat it does that make it right, vegitarians think it's wrong killing a cow to eat it so why should it be different for fish

If a fish swallows the hook,do not try to remove it,just cut the line (as far down the throat as you can)The hook will dissolve over a period of time, and the fish is no worse for wear.

Well you know what they say about fishing in my part of the world It's just a stick with a maggot on each end!
It is absolutely not justified as fish are doing what they do naturally and the next thing the know they are being hauled out of the water by some saddo and probably dying for no reason.
Stop doing it.

Obviously you've never worked in corporate America. The blood sport there is much more brutual and a lot more filled with bloodlust than fishing.
