My girlfriend killed my son...?

Hi everybody,

Here is the dream that she had the other night but a little background info first...

I have been with my girlfriend for about a year and have a son (4 years old) from a previous relationship. My girlfriend finds it hard that she can't do what she wants with me on the spur of the moment as she always has to take my son into account. She does not want children of her own.

and now the dream....

We were living in a nice house with a garden, she said that it was a typical family house. We had a number of cats and dogs as pets, she said about 5 or 6 of each. I was out somewhere and she came home and went inside. Everything was covered in blood. My son had killed all the pets by stabbing them to death with a knife. He then came into the room still holding the knife (he was 4 in the dream) and had a posessed look. He started to stride towards my girlfriend who then picked up a knife and stabbed him to death!

Help, any idea what that means?

My son and girlfriend get on fantastically well. They play together and do lots of handicraft.

The pets are symbols of something that we 'care' for, something that we are personally responsible for. Cats and dogs can't take care of themselves, for the most part, so taking care of them becomes our responsibility.

You being gone not only means you being gone from the problem, or your girlfriend believing that you are gone from the problem, but also the fact that she feels like she is alone in dealing with this situation. The boy 'killing' the pets is symbolic of him killing the things that either she is caring for, or her fears that he will kill everything that either she or you or both of you care for. The fear then becomes that he will then 'kill' her, or cause her to change into a kind of person she doesn't want to be, or fears to be. When confronted by a change we really don't want, we fight back.

It sounds like she is having a hard time feeling that she truly is integrated into your life. Think of it as having an older sibling, who having been the center of attention, is now sorta pushed aside by the needs of someone younger. If you aren't used to being in that role, it can feel like being abandoned, so that the person/child has to constantly strive in order to be a part of (or feel like a part of) the person's/parent's life.

It also sounds like she needs some special gf time, just for herself, like a day or weekend where she can be as spontaneous with you as she needs. Give her something to look forward to, and hopefully the pressure will begin to ease off of her mind. Also, let her know as much as you can how much she does mean to you, if she does, and that should help as well.

The nice house does represent your relationship and its typicalness. But the later part is the inner feeling of your girlfriend who thinks that your son is a hazard to her life and free living. That's why she pictured him killing the pets. And she also might feel that she may do something she'll regret later, represented by her killing your son. In short its better you distance those 2 for their own well being.

Wow, you sure she was actually dreaming this thing and not fantasizing it? The gory detail seems to be so... thought out, u know? Unlike dreams which are usually bizzarre and confused. If it was truly a dream, then I guess your son went to bed full (that's what death in a dream means, in our country). Keep him out of her way though, just in case.

Her resentment at his presence. And her need to rationalise her desire to kill him made that gory scene of cats and dogs being killed by him. The little Devil is a common term used to refer to small chidren and her mind conjured up his being possessed by an evil entity out to kill her (her relationship).

Pretty straightforward. Either she has to get over her dislike of him or you have to get another gf.
