Last week our family went to the beach. My son wanted to build a sand castle. He went up to the water's edge and tried to pile wet sand together, the waves washed it away. He became extremely frustrated and started crying. Being 4 we had a hard time explaining to him that he had to move just a little further away from the water, kids.

We also tried to explain that a good sand castle needs wet sand mixed with dry.

Dry sand: Reason, intellect, logic
Wet sand: The emotional and "spiritual" needs of humans

When you try to build a castle out of dry sand, it is instantly clear that you are wasting your time. When you try to build one out of wet sand, it SEEMS to work, for a bit. But it ultimately falls apart. That's why you never see someone trying to build a castle out of dry sand but you always see people trying to build them from wet sand and crying when it falls apart.

Some people know to mix reason with spiritual needs. Some tend to spirit without reason and fail

Delusional? I went to the beach with my kids! It really happened! Its not a crazy story. I didn't claim to see a god or walk on water did I?

I agree that you need both reason and spiritual awareness. But I'm afraid the sand castle metaphor will not work, because sand castles never last long anyway.

I like it.

To the person who said sandcastles don't last long anyway, I'd like to point out that to keep the sandcastle there, we must continually rebuild it. Same thing with our spiritual life as well. We must continually work on building it up for it to grow.

Define 'spiritual'. If it's a supernatural term, then no we don't need it. If it's just about the things that make life worth living, then, yes, it's nice to have your spiritual needs fulfilled.

If your looking for reason & understanding to marry with spiritual growth--you can't go past Buddhism.

Good discernment on your part!!! I like the way you have used your reasoning to project the spiritual side of understanding often lost to those without sight.

Certainly, many walk in darkness without light, here a flashlight to see the path.

I think your house will fall because you did not build it on a rock foundation like Jesus told us to.
