I have had my tattoo for over three years now. Occasionally it rises up and doesn't itch. It never used to rise up at all. It's only been the last two years that it does this. Does anyone have any ideas? Should I have it checked out?

You are starting to have reactions to it. Colored? Red? That is the most common. Most people who react this way have this happen with sun exposure and find that cortisone cream does the trick to get it back to normal.

I work at a tattoo shop and everyone has had this same occurance at one time or another. If it only last a few hours or a day i would say its not a problem. Unless you experience itching or a flaking of the skin you are probably just fine.

Right on. Coming from tattoo shop myself, everyone has the same problem on at least one of their tattoos. My back is real bad. It raises up and turns red and itches like hell when i get scratched, but i have a couple of em that raise up from time to time but they rarely itch. All of the ones that do have pretty fat black lines. I think the amount of abuse the skin takes putting enough black in the skin to be smooth has alot to do with it.all of my solid black tribals commonly swell. I have customers asking me about swelling and i tell them that if its real bad, the seek out a dermatologist. If its only swelling, then dont even worry about it. It's not uncommon.

I have a tattoo of a panther on my inner arm and whenever i do a lot of lifting it raises up. I went to my dermatologist and he told me that its because of increased bllod flow to the area.

This happens to my husband's tats, he has had them for seven years, he is a redhead and has sensitive skin. Try putting medicated lotion on it. If it doesn't help, talk to a dermatologist.
