Actually, Princess Cruselines offer any time dining as well as traditional dining. If your dining options are the criteria, it is worth looking into it.

I don't know about the history but I have thoughts on how they came about with freestyle. The cruise industry is very competitive and each cruise line really needed to come up with something to make it stand out. NCL and Princess are the only mass market lines that offer 'freestyle' dining. NCL also allows you to stay in your cabin on the morning of debarkation instead of sitting on the lido deck or a lounge for an hour or 2 while waiting to get off the ship.
