In the US, by law if you tell a telemarketer, "Please put me on your do not call list," they have to take your phone number off of their register. Additionally, you can go to www.donotcall.gov and register to have your phone number(s) taken off lists given to mass market companies. It may take a few weeks for your number to be removed from calling lists, however.

Anyone who invades your home unannounced, whether in person or by phone, deserves whatever reception they receive. I would suggest a very firm "we are not interested. remove us from your calling list" and hang up.
Do not let them go through their entire spiel before doing this. That wastes your time and theirs. The kindest, quickest thing to do is to interrupt (normally rude, but acceptable in this case) and tell them quickly then get off the line.
As much as we would like to, blowing whistles, yelling, cussing and being rude don't do much good.
Or...you COULD do what my mother once did...
She got a call, she allowed the guy to talk and talk, then when he requested her credit card number (this was a sales call) she said OK! Just let me go get it! Then set the phone down and ignored it for while.
I wonder how long it took before the guy gave up and hung up?

We have (in Australia) a Government funded "do not call register" that is an absolute god-send. Granted, it still allows for church groups and political parties to still call, but the majority are silenced with the threat of being fined up to $1.1 million. Been on the register for a month now and received no calls (fantastic!). Who needs to put up with their pushy, unprofessional and aggressive tactics? They do more harm than good, its a pity they seem not to realise how unpopular they are.

Me, I always know by the way they start and I cut them short by saying, "Are you selling something?" Then "Not interested, thank you" and hang up before they start their patter.
But the best I heard of is to put on a slightly vague tone (the person who told me said it was her "little old lady" voice) and say, "Oooh. That sounds nice. Just let me find a pencil."
Then leave the phone dangling. For a long time.

I know what you mean...they always seem to call right as you are sitting down to a meal,or have company over.I try to be polite and say " No thank you and please take me off your list." But as you know I'm sure, they just about always call back...and then...I'm not so nice.I hang up !

I do not like to be rude either. I know that the people doing the calls are just trying to makd a living. But it has become quite invasive.
"Who are you?"
"What do you want?"
"Will you please take me off your call list! I do not want this call!"
It has not stopped completely, but it seems to be reducing the number....gradually...

go there.
I like the anti-telemarketer script. I once had one of them nearly in tears. It was a bittersweet moment.
