Example: Andy G asked "Why do environmentalists think we are astronomically stupid?" about a public service announcement that he did not hear correctly. Not one of the many answers was from someone who actually saw or heard the ad, which claimed that IF ALL OF US (Californians) upgraded to more efficient air conditioner it would be like taking 275000 cars off the road. Among all of the rampant speculation, not one respondent seemed to consider the possibility that the question was based on a simple misunderstanding of the ad.

Because the answers are to a specific question, not an investigation into a person's ability to ask a valid question. Or are you implying that people should not answer the question asked, but should instead seek to answer a question that the asker MAY have intended to ask?

Some people THINK they know about a subject when in truth all they know are a few snippets of information gleaned from the media, at best this provides them with enough information to form an uneducated opinion. For some people this is all they need, instead of answering questions based on knowledge they answer based on opinion, which is often passed off as fact. This happens in many categories but perhaps more so in this one, global warming is after all, a contentious issue.

This type of approach to answering questions is at best irresponsible and can sometimes be quite dangerous. I've seen some truly moronic replies and in categories such as health if the advice was followed it would occasion more harm than good.

Regarding your point in question. I answer a lot of questions in this category and came across the one posed by Andy G. It was apparent there was an error but not being able to determine what the error was I skipped the question and instead answered his similar question along the lines of the ration of emissions of a car versus an air conditioner.

For the record, I answered that question and I did indeed suggest that it might be a misunderstanding, and I did search for and post a link to the California document that gave the number that led to the confusion. But I didn't know whether it was the questioner who misunderstood the ad, or the people who made the ad who misunderstood the document, so I left it at that.

I have absolutely no idea why I could take a guess and it may be the correct answer for one of the people but not for all of them. Your going to have to figure that question out on your own. And if you knew the answer why would you ask .

Well there are things you can do to help reduce the amount of harm you are causing the enviroment, you can do this by offsetting your carbon on websites such as; www.co2debt.com . On these sites you are able to prevent climate change by funding ethical reforestation projects. I personally found that www.co2debt.com was the best site for this because of their strong relationships with other non-profit organizations

If its one of those unanswerable questions (like this one), why shouldn't they go for the two points. Besides I need to make up for a TOS penalty these Gen Xers that monitor YA nailed me with. Todays kids are being raised without a clue about the fine arts of double entendre and sarcasm.

You just proved my point: Green wackos just go yammering on, happy to ignore the facts, or just make some up to suit their agenda. And we're all just supposed to bow down and renounce our entire lives, as if we haven't seen this dog and pony show a thousand times before.

The same reason people feel compelled to ask questions that no one knows anything about. Why do you read them? Why do you care? Have fun with it!!! It's all about entertainment and the slim possibility that you might learn something.

Because it gives us two points just for asking, so people post whatever they want and get two points, which is kinda nice, but pretty stupid and irritating if you're the one asking the question.

You'd have to be a complete idiot to take Yahoo Answers seriously. It's a fun way to pass the time and laugh at others.
