The conflict was called a World War or the Second World War because of the many countries involved before the end dates of the conflict were established.

To be correct post WW2 it should be refered to as:

The Second World War of 1939 - 1945.

Early During the war I think.

Maybe before the war even started (like the way the war between the US and USSR was named WW3 and it never happened)
