That's funny .Thorsten L you just made me laugh. After all the years of New Yorkers being really hesitant about driving in the South w/ NY plates because Southern cops had a more than well deserved reputation of regarding NY cars as banks on wheels, we discover that they're scared of us too. Relax . Few will notice and even fewer will care about your Alabama plates.
We just want you to come to our city , have the best time of your life , go home and tell your friends that despite the fact we talk funny we're really OK people.
I'm going to highly recommend that you not drive in Manhattan
Manhattan is unique driving environment unto itself with it's own unique rules behaviors and skills .
Since despite my great and hard earned advice you're gonna do it anyway at least do it on a weekend and park your truck in a pay lot. The price of a ticket and / or getting towed is incredible and greatly exceeds the cost of parking.
Btw, Where's your campground ?

Don't know whether you had any thoughts about bringing the
motor home into the city (DON'T !!!) There really is No advantage to even bring the S10 in unless you plan to really intend to buy A LOT! of souvenirs. If the campground isn't near any convenient access to NYC's excellent mass transit system (I'm not being sarcastic) and you're on the West Side of the Hudson (NJ, PA , not Long Island) I might recommend taking the S10 through the Lincoln Tunnel and parking it in the Port Authority Parking lot,(Right outside the tunnel) Not Cheap, but nothing in NYC is. This will put you in Midtown near a lot of stuff and treat yourself to NYC's best "E"ticket ride to get up or downtown - the NYC taxi! (Way better than Space Mountain!)
Remember New Yorkers aren't necessarily rude intentionally, they are just in a hurry!,I've heard the same about Parisians!
Welcome and have a great time!

Drive in NYC on a Sunday best day. Less traffic. No parking after the Sept. 11 attacks on America. Figure to pay $20 an hour to park.
Do not be concerned about safety. NY is just like all the other towns. No one will see you license plates, there's many other distractions for them to stay busy.

Under no circumstance take a Motor Coach into Manhattan unless you have a direct shot at about 6:00 am into some huge space where you will leave it parked. NYC is NOTHING like LA or Birmingham. It will take you forever to maneuver it around the narrow, one way streets & you are barred from the fast moving parkways. And virtually no commercial garages can handle them. The S-10 is no problem. In fact driving in Manhattan is no big problem -- it is parking that will kill you. Even parking is reasonably doable if you are patient; realize you may have to park several blocks from your destination and look upon it as having to rent a hotel room for your vehicle. (There are even places where you can park for free: after about 7:00 pm all the loading zones open up & there are various side streets that are unmetered. If you patiently cruise them you can often find someone pulling out) Out of town plates CAN be problematic if you park on an out of the way street over-night. Car burglaries are so common most people don't even report them. Locals know not to leave anything in their cars. But the bad guys figure out of towners may have baggage, gifts, cameras, etc in them. I've known a number of people who suffered losses visiting NYC that way. Still, in years of visiting & parking my Florida registered pickups & SUV's in NYC, I've never had a break in there. BTW, my last Manhattan parking ticket -- overtime on a meter -- was $95.00 & they tell me it's going up.

Please, please, please do NOT drive into the city. Trust us New Yorkers when we tell you this--it's not fun.

First of all, you won't find any street parking and all of the ramps will be about $20+ an HOUR. There is absolutely no need to bring a car into this city. Park it in Jersey or Westchester or wherever you're staying and take a train into the city.

I think it's illegal to park a bus on the street in NYC.

Leave it in Jersey, or Long Island, and take the train in.
