Sucking is reflex - both for survival (drinking mother's milk) but also to prepare the lip muscles for speech.

The spiritual portion relates to the self-soothing most have mentioned. But once again, the subtler deeper knowledge takes certain intelligence and skill to seek, obtain, understand and transmit. To understand, look at the hand position which is in the mudra called mehru danda, the "thumbs up" position, which directs the prana energy up the spine toward the developing brain. There is also significance relating to the flow of energy in the body when the thumb is in contact with the palate of the mouth, like some meditation practices involve holding the tongue on the roof of the mouth.

I think u r writing thesis on spirituality i.e. why u write such questions which an average person would not think of. So far as I know, I think a child feels secure by keeping thumb which is quite apart from rest of the fingers, in to his/her mouth. It gives the child energy, may be it is an exercise for his mouth and palate as child keeps on moving all limbs while lying on bed so he/she exercises the mouth, tongue with thumb.

Give the child a fake thumb which will not make them bucktoothed that they have to take out to talk, its called a Pacifier. and it has that ring around it so they have to take it out. Then encourage them to learn how to talk by rewarding them with praise, the Pacifier will soon be forgotten. Do not use force because then they rebel, this is true the childs whole life.

Children suck on objects (including pacifiers) to soothe themselves; sucking is one of a baby’s natural reflexes and completely typical for babies and young children. Children suck on things because sucking is one of a baby’s natural reflexes and as infants get older it serves many purposes. It may make them feel secure and happy and helps them learn about their world to suck on their thumbs, fingers, pacifiers or other objects. Young children may also suck to soothe themselves. Since thumb sucking is relaxing, it may help induce sleep
