About 1 1/2 years ago I went to the ER with severe pain to the left of my back on the lower side (flank area) with the pain radiating around my hip and down my inside thigh. It sorta felt like spasms inside of me. My white blood cells were elevated so Dr. hospitalized me for IV treatment, released me the next day and directed me to attend therapy for my back. The pain continued so he decided to x-ray my lower back. The results showed that my left kidney was three times the size of my right and then ordered a MRI which reflected a good sized mass within my left kidney. My treatment pretty much stopped there. This was about a year ago. My pain has continued, usually lasts for 2 - 3 days at a time, stops, then resumes within a week or two, but it has not been as severe as that 1st occurance. Its more a dull irritating continual pain. Dr did tell me at one time that with kidney stones the pain is very very severe and that it doesn't involve pain that radiates down the thigh?

The physician should have referred you to a Nephrologist or Urologist then and there, it's hard to believe that you've gone along for so long without any followup.

It appears that the condition was misdiagnosed the first time around but the story gets worse as you relate it for you should have been sent to a specialist after the MRI.

Don't waste any time, this could be very serious.

You must go back to the hospital or a specialist and get thouroughly checked, with ultrasounds and whatever else it takes. Kidneys are not sth. to neglect. This mass must be identified and if it is a stone it can be reduced to sand, otherwise it must be identified and make sure it is not blocking your ureter etc., or your kidney could be destroyed. I think you should be at the doctor's office right now, and you should have resolve dthe problem a week ago. Don't stop until you know what you have, and how to treat it.
