Because the American public care more about Paris Hilton getting out of jail than they do about the war.

Because the left have turned this war into Vietnam. Soon the calls of baby killer and oil mercenary will be more common. Its no longer considered fighting for our freedom. We are fighting for oil, even though most of the oil imported in this country is from canada and not the middle east.
Their is a disconnect in this country regarding service in the military, most do not see it as an honarable thing to do, service to your fellow man in this country have been lost. Its a ME generation man. How does this affect me? is the only concern.
In short americans have decided that the war is not worth fighting and that the solidiers do not deserve the respect and gratitude of a nation. You wil see no ticker tape parade in NY when this is over. No one will be clamering to buy a veteran a drink.
All I can say is thank them in person if you see them.

Why would they have a moment of silence when they can have a moment of commercials, instead? My major problem with the news stations right now is that they're very flippant about casualties. "13 killed in suicide blast. More on Paris after this!"
When I went on R&R, I heard one of the most disturbing stories I've heard in my life, about a VBIED attack on a patrol base. I doubt that any of you remember February 19th, but that day was utter hell for my brothers in arms.
If you want to show your respect or appreciation, there are many things that you can do. http://www.anysoldier.com , http://www.soldiersangels.com , and many, many other websites will help you to send letters, packages, and emails to deployed soldiers. If you're looking for things to do in the states, find out where your nearest VA hospital is, and see if they need volunteers, or contact a VFW (veterans of foreign wars) Post and see what they might need. A lot of our older veterans tend to get forgotten.
And in response to the poster above, I've had many, many drinks bought for me by people grateful for my service in OIF and OEF.

Because they are to busy sniffing after Miss Pee Hilton for a news story than caring about the brave men and women putting thier lives on the line for their country.

I don't know why they don't, but maybe because so many have been lost. Some stations did during the beginning, ABC I think did, but it has gone on so long now. I usually take a moment to myself and say a little prayer for the loved ones they have left behind.

Jim Lehrer's NewsHour still has half a minute of silence (I think) and shows the pictures and names of the fallen.

they dont want the american public to actually know ow many soldiers are lost in the war because eventually there will be a public outcry and outrage...think about it....if we had a moment of silence for every soldier lost in the war..it would take days....its sad!
