how long is the trip? its perfectly fine. in fact, most dogs would prefer it. mine does. i put mine in a kennel, or just in the bed of my truck all the time. she cant wait to get up there. though keep in mind with the wind blowing on your dog, hell be more thirsty so make sure you stop for water every so often.

There are idiotic laws all over so common sense may fail, but, it is no different then being in the back of a pickup truck in a crate and that is widely accepted as fine. The weather may matter too, say, if you are traveling from Texas to Oregon in November, the dog will be uncomfortably cold due to noninclimation.
Something that didn't occur to me until reading another answer but there are trailers available made especially for dogs (I was and still am assuming you meant a utility trailer)

Depends on the size of the dog. If you're talking a Mastiff, I'd consider it - especially if he's an outside dog. However, it may be quite a bumpy ride for him. If it's an inside dog like a Cocker, I personally wouldn't do it. A dog should be restrained though while inside the vehicle. It makes them more secure. Try putting Fido in a crate INSIDE the vehicle. That would be the best option.

you mean by truck? I have seen hunting dogs travel like this but I don't recommend it. Because if there is an accident they will be killed, and would you want all that wind in your face? When I drive with the pets the pets ride inside the car/truck with me. My cats I put in a carrier and strap it in the back seat. The dogs like to look out the window so they wear the seat belt and I keep there leash on them incase I have to make a quick grab when getting in and out of the car.

NOT EVER!!!
Would you even consider of putting a child in a trailer while driving??? I don't think so. The crate with the dog should be in the vehicle you are driving.

Have some pity for your poor dog. It will be too hot to ride in a carrier like that with the sun beating on the top of the carrier. When we left during the Rita evacuation, there were so many pets lost and throw to the side of the road being carried like this, and this was late September.

No. That would be too dangerous for your dog. Put him in the crate in the bed of the truck strapped in place, or inside the car.

If you mean a dog carrier in an open trailer, (open like the bed of a truck), that would not be safe for him. I don't think laws prohibit that, but you put him at risk.

I think that it's just okay. However, you need to secure the crate so that the dog won't be hurt while you are traveling. Got it?
