IF you think so...why? Because things aren't fully explained?

That's the thing about the Monodei religions(Jewish, Christian, Muslim). We're not suppossed to know the full truth until we ger into Heaven.

So, knowing that, what is your reasoning for believing the bible is fiction?

No stupid answers like "because I said so" or something dumb to that effect. I want reasonable, well explained, answers.

For people like Ivan_the_terrible...

The "Christians", who assumed I was a nonbeliever....

look at what you have done. You have judged me...and you have gotten it WRONG.

I have been in A church since I was 2...I believein Jesus, I believe in God, I believe in the Angels and the Demons.

I know what it means to be a Christian, which is something you preach but do not know....

I asked people for reasonable answers, but because of you, trying to insult me by asking me if I believe my ancestors were monkeys or donkeys, you not only got my religion wrong. You also got evolution wrong.

Charles Darwin's theory of Evolution did not say Humans were monkeys, but humans and monkeys were once the same race. That there was a mutation where Humans advanced and monkey did not.

To be a true, open minded believer, you must know all the sides to the story. But Ivan...you know none.

Good question.

Yes, I'd say it can be classified as fiction, given that fiction is defined as "an imaginary thing or event, postulated for the purposes of argument or explanation."

You have to remember that the people who wrote the stories of the bible were just that... people. Prone to error, perception, and individualistic styles of writing. In today's modern world, you do not see people turning into salt, men demolishing cities with their bare hands, of people living inside whales. However, these did happen... or at least that was their perception of what happened... to the people who were there at the time.

Remember that one of the tenents of Christian Philosophy is that God cannot contradict Himself. It's simply a contradiction that means that, even if He moves within mysterious ways, He moves within natural law. God is not magic, afterall.

So, given that, did these things happen? Is it the truth? I say it is, FROM a certain point of view - the view of the people who were there at that time. What a lot of bible bashers get wrong is that they think that Catholics (I'm discounting Christians from that classification and I'll exlain why later), have founded their entire belief on the bible. That's not true. There's the bible and the tradition that's being carried on by the Church.

However, the Catholic Church does not make the claim that it understands the bible, nor has it ever made the claim that it has correctly, 100% interpreted the bible (Christians, unfortunately make this claim, which I believe is pure hubris). If it did, then it wouldn't have aplogized to Galileo. People are quick to condemn the Church whenever it makes corrections, failing to consider that it is falliable. What makes it infalliable is the faith that it preaches. Faith meaning that there will always be things that we do not understand but we must never lose the belief, the "coin", that God is with us.

I remember, this quote from a movie - can't remember which one, a Nazi German asking a Jew in a scoffing manner "Do you really believe that your God parted the red sea for you so your people could escape?" To which the Jew simply replied, "Well, we did escape."

And at the very least, believer or not, you have to admit, it's a great read filled with stories that have fueld the imaginations of generations and generations to come.

Not because I said so - but the Bible is true and the proof is so easy to find if you know where to look. If you want just a little proof of what I am saying here it is: I can't go into all the details, but in the 11th Chapter of Revelations it mentions God's last two witnesses on earth and it says,"their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt. (Jerusalem)....And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three and a half days ........Now this was written 2000 years ago by a revealing given to the writer, John, who 'saw' it all' and up until the past century or less even the most devout believers had trouble with this - how could this be possible?? NOW WE KNOW! Satellite TV can go into the whole world. Now another thing is Israel "God's chosen people" according to the Bible. So many prophecies about it (promise of restoration-Jeremiah 33) Look at it - a tiny little nation surrounded by huge nations who hate it, but it survives. But all that is happening there now and will happen is prophecied. Even Iraq (Babylon) and the whole world. One more thing - It says in the last days that people will not be able to "buy or sell" without the 'mark of the beast' --Satan, or his predecessor, the 'Antichrist' will be allowed, in God's timetable, to fool and rule the world for a time. This was written 2000 yrs ago and we are 'within throwing distance' of that now! We can do scarcely anything without our SS# and now they are putting chips in people's bodies for identification, etc These are not the mark of the beast - his will be his own but the technology is here! Talk about 'Big Brother"! Our every move almost will be monitored! A One World Government is prophecied and in the making! If you study prophecy and see the things that were prophecied that have already happened--wars, fall of civilizations, so much more, it will at least make you think! Most of it has been fulfilled, and the closer it gets to the 'end time' the more bad things are going to happen. (Matt. 24). In the Old Testament there are prophecies about Christ's birth, life and death (Isaiah for one, written 700 BC). Revelations is hard to understand due to the symbolic nature but the lamps, candlesticks, horses, etc. etc. all represent something and it takes study from references, Bible scholars or some such
to help make it plain. People say it is too scary BUT to be forewarned is to be forearmed. You can see it unfolding and it is quite interesting to behold. Well, you can believe this or not but how can anyone not see that the more God is taken out of the 'picture' as some have and are trying to accomplish, the worse things get. This is also prophecied!!

I doubt very much the Bible is based in fiction......it's effects on the human condition are far too lasting. If you really look most major religions believe very close to the same things....basically any way there is mention of each religions main characters in the teachings of the other religion...I think everyone has a piece of the truth and when it is all over we'll all know the same final truth.

What sounds more plausible to your logical brain?

1- An invisible man in the sky plays favorites with the humans and gives the Jews his love, devotion and Israel.

2- Some old Jewish myths that were past down for centuries were finally written down, translated hundreds of times and are now being taken as fact by people who really want to have a nice place to go after they die.

When you turn on your computer does God's love make it run or electricity? If you believe the former then you should apply this logic to god and the bible. Believe what is proveable or at least logical...

I believe the Bible is primarily fiction. There may be some stories that are based on actual events, but I don't believe any of the mysticism actually happened. I believe this to be true based on similar myths from a variety of cultures throughout the world and from various eras. The stores of Jesus follow the basic hero's epic and is similar to the life of Gilgamesh, who was a true, historic king, but whose life was greatly embellished in fable. But the bible is a mixture of ancient Hebrew legends along with stories based -- at least initially -- on the life of Jesus who I believe was a real person (though I realize even that is debatable) but was exaggerated through story telling.

If you believe donkeys and snakes can talk then I guess you'll believe anything.

Do you believe the earth is flat, that the stars are held up by firmament, that god has feet, that the sun revolves around the earth? On and on, the bible is full of ridiculous stories.... many of them plagiarized - like the ones about Jesus.

Do you really believe God sent a bear to kill a bunch of kids for making fun of a bald man?

Should children be stoned to death for disobeying their parents?

Everything I just said is in the Bible... how could it not be Fiction?!

I think at best (as far as 'true' goes)... Jesus was who he said he was...

and the red letters are pretty spot on...

some of the other stuff... seems to go outside of his teachings... so I have some big questions there...

I personally think if Jesus had thought it was that important... he would have probably mentioned it...

and if you notice... those who are most hateful... the scripture they cite... not the red letters...

I don't think there can be a reasonable answer. People believe in heaven because it gives hope and is comforting to those who are grieving. Without concrete evidence how can one be reasonable?

Ummm I haven't decided yet! There is a sweetness to the stories that appeals to me. Cynical logic also appeals, but I'm torn.
