which one if either should be the Ichibon Sempai

What do you consider is the requirement for Sempai, as a side note.

In our Dojo, the Sempai's are respected teachers because of their abilities, training, and effectiveness in teaching others. If the Master were to raise one who is less competent above the others, it would reflect poorly on both the Master and the Dojo. The Master has some good friends who are also Sempai's. The ranking of his Sempai's is fairly obviously related to their abilities. The ranking of his friends is nearly invisible to all but him, which is as I think it should be...

Unless you're japanese and your school is in Japan, then that question is a no brainer. But in Japan where heirarchy and seniority plays a big part in their culture, skill is irrelevant, a sempai simply means a senior student or upperclassman, or someone who joined the school ahead of you regardless of skill, same as in high school and college.

Neither! If I had only two students and one of them was as worthless as you say, since I was doing a lousy job half the time, I would reduce my students membership by 50%. Those remaining can fight it out between themselves.

Sempai simply means senior, in this case senior student
