I dont think the term was originally meant to be derogative. Thats just what female dogs are called. In all species of animals, there is a name for a male and a female, and female dogs are called Bitches.

I think it carried over to humans because.. well, have you ever seen a female dog in heat? Female dogs can be moody at times. They live up to the term "*****"

It is just what they are called, like a young goat is a kid. It is used as an insult by referring to a woman as a dog and harkens back to a time when canines were seen as something less then desirable. It has been used so heavily as a slang word that many people have a hard time understanding that it is a proper English word and that a dog only refers to the male canine.

Actually the term referring to a female dog was used in biblical times. I can't remember where exactly, but I know I read about it in the Old Testament, and was surprised. How it relates to to female humans...I am not sure.

That was the proper name for female dogs long before it became derogatory slang. In old English it was Bicce, and in Middle English it was Bicche. It was first used around 1000 BCE. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/*****

It became a derogatory term for humans initially as an insult to women who were compared to dogs. It was used as an insult. Now it is used as an insult for men as well, and while it's still an insult, it occassionally is used as a joking kind of insult.

How did you get away with writing that? I once had something pulled off of here for including that word even though it was in the context of a female dog!!

Female dogs when protective of their litters can be vicious! It probably comes from that.
