Good question. It's a shame religious people won't see the reality of things though.

Yes. I think the world would be a better place if it had one less major thing to disagree about. Religion creates separation between people of different religions and discrimination against those who are different. There certainly has been no shortage of wars in the name of, so called, religion.

But in religion's defence, I'd say that there'd be a lot of people at a loss for answers if they couldn't use god as the answer to the unknown. Religion usually comforts the insecure and ignorant who need to be reassured. That's why it's so popular. The weak need to be given hope because otherwise they would just give up. Look at any primitive society and you'll see a profoundly religious group of people.

Common sense should be enough to provide people with the basics for moral standards, after all what are morals but guidelines to help individuals live together without disturbing each other, right? Religions are there to give common sense rules to those who otherwise wouldn't have any.

But, sadly, some people use religion as a vehicle to rally support against others for political reasons. That's the biggest problem with religions today. They are misused.

Why can't people just live and let live? That's my question.

B well.

Yes, I think the world would be better off without religion. Citing charities of today doesn't really answer the question if religion's helped humanity. In general, religion caused regression in humanity, not progress. As example you can just look at all the knowledge that had to be "rediscovered" after the middle ages, knowledge that the Egyptians, Romans, etc. had had for centuries which the church suppressed. Most of today's conflicts are not so much inspired by religion as driven by religion. The whole your god is better than my god argument. As for morals, I am an atheist and have higher morals than most religious people I know. Its not fear of an afterlife that keep people from being immoral.
For Wahnote: Religion is not allowed in China? Where did you ever get that idea from? US propaganda? They do suppress some very extremist sects but people are definately not forbidden from worshipping. My sister-in-law lives in Beijing and she is an active and missionary christian and have never had any problems in the seven years she's been there.

The world would be a better place without religion, definitely.
The people who say that charities would suffer and that people need religion for a moral base are just plainly wrong.
I give to charity and am a highly empathic, moral person, but I'm not in the least bit religious. I do not need an excuse to treat my fellow man humanely - are they saying that the same people would be out looting and committing mass murder if they weren't religious?
Rubbish!
My mother's family are Irish Catholic and my father's are Protestant - both have lost family members because of sectarian violence, so they decided that with my brother and I we would get to choose what (if any) religion we wanted to be when we were old enough to make that decision ourselves.
We both chose no religion and I'm grateful for my parents for not 'indoctrinating' us with their former beliefs.

I strongly believe that the world would be a better place without religion. As I sit here watching "The Magdalene Sisters" (which shows the controlling, hateful, bigotted, misogynistic, evil side of catholicism) it just reminds you of the evilness that ALL these religions show.

Humanity has been hindered by religion over thousands of years. We have been unable to make as many scientific advances because of these people.

Humanity has suffered at the cruel hands of these cults -children born to unmarried parents shunned by a "religious" society; rape victims subjected to torment; gay people bullied and victimised; women getting stoned for affairs (even when it involves 2 people!); controlling of the weak members of society through abuse, murder (for non-conforming), rape, threats of hell and such like.

I don't know how these so-called religions have lasted for as long as they have. They are all obviously contemptful, evil, controlling organisations who have no desire in practising what they preach.

I will be glad when every church, mosque, and synagogue is knocked down or used as something more useful for humanity. I would be glad to see when the vatican has been stormed and all the belongings that it have stolen are returned to those who need it.

EDIT : To Dee,
As the British Empire no longer exists and all these religions do, I think its them that should be questioned.

There would still be a God, even if there were no religion in the world. God exists without the need of religion, it's humans that created the different types of religions. People like putting labels on things, but the truth is....God doesn't need a category or a label, He's open to anyone willing to listen and believe.

Do you think getting rid of religion gets rid of God? It wont. You will still have religious people no matter what you try to do to silence them. And yes a great many people have been helped by religions. The Catholic Church is the biggest charitable organization in the world, that feeds, clothes, shelters and gives medicine, to millions upon millions every single day. Religion nor God has caused wars. Greed of mankind has caused wars, that and pride and disrespect for others beliefs or ways of life.

I shall repeat this statement over and over again. People are capable of both violence and moral excellence,-----religious or otherwise, And while the media give much attention to religious violence, a lot of the strife in to day world has little to do with religion. Christianity has inspired countless Charities Hospitals, Schools Universities as well as Great Arts literature music, fine buildings, even the structure of our Law, [swearing on oath] And the last great world wars has nothing to do with religion.

Hello,

No perhaps things would be much worse. Also we see that secular states that even partially discouraged or banned religion from Nazi Germany and Stalinist Russia through to Mao and the Khymer Rouge have absolutely dreadful track records. Many religions do seem to keep the beast caged so to speak. Politics and greed go on forever even without religion.

Take a look at communist China, where religion is not allow.
look at their progress, how people are treated.

Now look at United states, how freedom of religion help progress. Look at how the people are free in U.S.

Now compare other countries with or without religion, what answer do you have?

Indeed there are bad religions, but I am sure you will agreed that, religions that teaches family values and free agency, and Liberty is good for everyone.

Side note, United States is not perfect, but it sure is a free
country. God bless America.

I think it's the best thing in the world.

It's the reason we're safe in our beds at night.

It's the passing on of principles & values generation to generation that has, tried & tested, helped maintain peace & lack of fear on earth.

What would the point of being good be, if there were no point?

Agnosticism is forgivable, but irreligiosity, taken to extreme, is every vice & sin under the sun - with nothing to restrain it.

It would be Armageddon. :-)
