How come people throw up or gag whenever they see something disgusting?

The gag reflex is involuntary so they genuinely can't help it. I know my Mom would go nuts because if the dog threw up my Dad would throw up and she'd have 2 messes to clean up! LMAO

Extreme anxiety, which can be caused by seeing something disgusting or disturbing, causes a series of physiological responses (including activation of the nervous system's fight-or-flight response) that can alter functioning in the immune and digestive system. This stimulates (and simulates) the feeling of being in great danger, thus your body is attempting to rid yourself of the undesired stimulus.
This fight-or-flight response causes several physical changes to occur within your body. Blood (which is normally settled in the stomach to protect its lining from its acid) floods major muscle groups in anticipation of either a fight or flight (escape). Once the blood has been sent to allocated parts of the body, only stomach acid remains in the stomach--which can trigger nausea, leading to throwing up. You might also experience a substantial increase in saliva, which is being produced to protect the enamel on your teeth from highly acidic stomach acid--should it be the case that you need to vomit (throw up). Throwing up is intended to cleanse your body of pathogens, including impurities such as poison, and in some cases stomach acid.

My husband does that and I laugh at him but he cannot help it. We have been married many years and he is unreal with how it hits. I was eating and he happened to see a hair in my food. He said Oh my god don't eat anymore. Before I knew it he was headed to the bathroom and he up chucked. I laughed my head off when I found out it was over a hair on MY plate.....
