I was raised Mormon so I speak it fluently..
If you went to a Mormon church now, you probably wouldn't experience any more racism then you would at any other church. They don't preach racism. And no they don't think black people will be their slaves in heaven.
However, if you study their history you will find some racist things. For example, the story of Cane and Able. They use to teach this story when I was younger, but I think they avoid it now to be politically correct.
It goes like this: When Cane killed his brother God became so mad that he "marked" Cane with black skin. They said this is where black people came from.
Because of this curse from God black people could not hold the priesthood in the Mormon Church until the 70's when the "prophet" had a revelation that God had taken off the curse and they could now hold it. Btw, “holding the priesthood” in the Mormon religion is something every male can do beginning at age 12 and is basically a way of saying you have a power from God that can be used for blessings and such.

While there may be individual Mormons since the Church's founding (it being formally establised April 6th, 1830) who have been racist, this should in no way be interpreted as either being formal Church policy (it's not) or a representation of the majority of Mormons (there are more than a few blacks in the Church, as well as members of every other ethnic group). No, we do not believe blacks will be servants to anyone else in heaven. I've had the opportunity to have personally known several black Mormons, and have served right along side them in several capacities.
(And as a bit of a side note, the Mormon Church presently has more members outside of Utah than in Utah.)

The mormon faith believed that all brown people were cursed. it is not a belief strictly held by mormons. many christians used the same logic (which came from an interpretation of a curse on one of Noah's sons) to justify racism and slavery. Christianity as a whole , like american culture in general was racist for a majority of it's history, with change being a relatively recent thing. Considering the US become a country in 1776 and the civil rights movement did not take place until the 50's and 60's I would say the mormons are ahead of the repent for racism pace compared to other christian groups. It took them only 100 years as compared to the 3-400 years for other denominations.

The silliness of the claims against Mormons never ceases to amaze me.
There is a black member of our Bishopric. That means he holds the highest priesthood. There are several black members in our ward.
Any racism experienced by black members is a result of the sins of the members. The prophets have spoken clearly and sharply against racism, as recently as October 2006.
In fact, a part of the reason Mormons were persecuted in Missouri before the Civil War is because the Church and their members were antislavery, and many Missourians were afraid that their votes would tip the scale, making Missouri a free state, rather than a slave state.
NO! This is not true. Please tell your sister to learn about Mormons from the Mormons...there are a lot of lies out there!

I've never heard of the Mormons having any slaves in heaven... someone is just pullin your chain. I think that they believe everyone is equal. My roommates are Mormon and they are the nicest people I know... there is nothing pretend about them. They are the same people on Sunday as they are the rest of the week. These Mormons are some of the BEST Christian's I know. They truly follow Christ teachings.
Its sad but racism can be found in all kinds of people. Some people are just dumb like that.

I'm black and I have Mormon friends. From what they talk about everyone they know in their church is loving, Christ-like and accepting of them regardless of skin color. I can't believe a question like this is even being asked.
Does it happen in other places? Maybe. But an entire religion should not be labeled as such because of the experiences of a few. If that were the case, every white church in the south would be racist - and so would every black one.

I think the potential for racism is true with any church, not just Mormons. And in all of my research on Mormons, I've NEVER seen anything about the slaves in heaven thing.

I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon). There might be some members who are racist but that is the same in every church. Human kind has a tendancy to pick who they don't like. I have had numerous friends in the church who are black and don't feel they are picked on. My husband is black and holds the offic of Elder. There is no teaching about blacks being our slaves in heaven. You need to get your information from members themselves and not from Anti-Mormon lit.

Prior to 1980, African-Americans were not allowed to hold the priesthood in the Mormon church. Following Mormon doctrine, this meant they could not go to the temple to perform the works they believe are needed to get into the "highest" heaven- the celestial kingdom. Mormons believe that people in "lesser" heavens- the telestial and terrestial kingdoms- serve those in the celestial kingdom. So logically it follows that prior to 1980, African Americans were permitted to join the church, but in their view of eternity, were destined to serve "temple worthy" mormons in heaven for eternity.

True or not depends on who you believe
Those non-mormons, mormon bashes, or real member of the LDS church.
As an long time LDS, no such "slave" doctrine exist.
Indeed, there are bad Mormons among us,causing much conflict and pain, but most are good and real loving people.
Being racist is not tolerated in our church.
