First, ointments and sprays are not designed for severe pain.
Suggestions:
1] start taking glucosamine, 3 pills a day if about 150 pounds, 4 if over 200. Also take omega three fish oils.
2] maintain normal weight - less stress on already tender joints
3] walk or swim or whatever you can do to keep active - arthritic patients who exercise regularly report less pain
4] do gentle stretching exercises every day
5] go to the health food store, and ask for a hot hemp stick - it's like an overgrown chapstick you can put on the part that hurts [ no drugs - has hot peppers, eucalyptus, peppermint, cloves etc. that you can just rub on! [ P.S. - do not grab it by accident and put on your mouth - talk about hot lips! ]
6] consider a chiropractor
7] consider accupuncture
8] consider professional massage

The ointment or sprays or solutions for back pain, or neck pain or joint pain...they act by 'confusing' the pain. As they don't really get to the problem that causes the pain, as they don't usually penetrate the skin, but just get into the skin deeply enough to stimulate the nerves, you notice the skin symptoms which mask the deeper pain.
So menthol like ointments that make it feel cool, or feel like it's burning or warm, take some of the concentration away from the bone, and it feels like there's less pain.
So you can sort of pick your own type of sensation, the one that works best for you. And you can alternate between different types depending on your tolerance, and your skin's tolerance to these substances.

This is considered a first degree burn. But it seems like a really bad one. Treatments are as follows: If your case is mild and not life threatening, the doctor may simply suggest plenty of fluids, aspirin, or other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs). Additional topical measures such as cool compresses, Burow solution soaks, or high-quality moisturizing creams and lotions may be prescribed. If your case is severe enough, oral steroid therapy (cortisonelike medications) may be prescribed for several days. Steroid creams placed on the skin show minimal to no benefit. Stronger pain-relieving medication may be prescribed in certain cases. If you have blistering, steroids may be withheld to avoid an increased risk of infection. If you are dehydrated or suffering from heat stress, IV fluids will be given, and you may be admitted to the hospital. People with very severe cases may be transferred to the hospital's burn unit. And some topical treatments: Lidocaine or Benzocaine can be administered to the spot of injury and will generally negate most of the pain. Lidocaine and benzocaine are popular FDA approved local anesthetic pain relievers for sunburns, and are available at most drugstores in the United States in the form of ointment or spray. The pain and burning associated with a sunburn can be relieved with a number of different remedies applied to the burn site. The skin can be hydrated by applying topical products containing Aloe vera and/or vitamin E, which reduce inflammation. Hydrocortisone cream may also help reduce inflammation and itching. People with sunburn should avoid the use of butter; this is a false remedy which can prevent healing and damage skin. When treating open sores caused by a sunburn, like any other open skin wound, it is best to avoid lotions or other directly-applied ointments. Antibacterial solutions and gauze can be used to prevent skin infections. Vinegar is also a natural anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory that treats sunburn effectively. Chrispy Critter After Burn Gel contains vinegar, vitamin E, and aloe.

If you live in a climate where it's chilly at night, it might be a good idea to use an electric blanket on low to keep your back warm.
I did that several weeks ago when I threw my back out because in the Northeast, the weather has been dipping from high to low a lot. That way, you won't wake up with a cold, sore back.
