I'm a 5'10" girl. I love running and have run half marathons with good results. I would like to run marathons competitively. Am I at a disadvantage because of my height? All the best female distance runners seem so much shorter.

TIA.

Listen up! Paula Radcliffe is arguably the world's greatest distance runner. She holds the current women's world marathon record - an amazing 2:15:25!!! In addition to that, she holds many other running records! Paula is 5'8". She's taller than average for a runner and she also has a very strange running style. Paula is physically gifted, but most importantly, she is tough as nails and has a very strong will to win. So forget about how tall you are - that's negative. Discard that kind of thinking. If you love running, that's a GIFT. Don't waste it. Get out there and run!

5' 10" for a lady, no big deal. All runners world class and otherwise are not 5'7" and 135(guys).

Many larger runners have been quite excellent. John Walker(NZ )world Mile record 6' 2", Bob Kennedy Top flight American at 6'3" plus.

If you can take the training, your height is immaterial.

No, its an advantage to be small and skinny to begin with but you have a huge advantage over them if you are willing to take advantage of it. Your long legs allow you to be more energy efficient in your strides work on staying flexible and you can put this to good use.

By the way I'm 6'1'' and I've had lots of success as a long distance runner, their is more then one body build that is efficient for running, remember that and never question your ability. You sound like you have a great attitude for running, stay with it!

You are never too tall for running. Im 6' 4" and feel that I am at an advantage because I have longer strides than someone 5' 9".

No, your perfectly fine. Height doesn't matter at all and I think being tall is an advantage because you can take longer strides. I myself am 6'3 at age 16 and I find it alot easier then having short pudgy legs when it comes to running. All it really comes down to is can you believe in yourself. Wow I feel corny haha.

I think you mean the best female distance runners seem so much more kenyan. And they probably tend to be short and lean. Don't worry. Anybody can run.

It's a little tougher for us tall folks, but there have been some successful tall runners, so keep at it.

Find Randy Newman's song "Short People" and listen to it frequently. It'll help motivate you to beat those little pissants.
