In Germany the most popular beer is Pils. 65% of the beer sold in Germany is a Pils, e. g. Becks, Warsteiner, Bitburger, Veltins, Königs Pilsener... however, currently the best selling Pils brand (and thus the best selling beer) is Krombacher.
Apart from that there are so many different kinds of beer, everyone has its preferrred kind of beer and beer brand. Mine is the local Alt (dark beer) - and I love the brands Uerige, Füchschen and Schumacher.
@ Sheila: Heineken is a Dutch beer and it has a very bad reputation in Germany. Grolsch - also Dutch - is much more popular. I would guess that the most successful import beer in Germany is Desperados.

Being a former chef and having travelled to Germany, it is alot like North American beer trends, with all the local brewerys and styles of beers, there are national brands like Budweiser in the US and here in Canada Molsons or Labatts.
For the German market you would find the local beers to be popular, and there may be a few who travel that consume others from the various states around there city's.
I am partial to the Munich area beers, St Pauli and Lowenbrau.

Bitburger is or at least was the largest selling beer in Germany. Becks has been the number one German beer in the USA for a very long time.
My favorite import? Tough question since I like several styles depending on weather, food and company. Guiness.
