Since Jesus is truly a man, his sacrifice wasn't a substitute. It was a real sacrifice, by a real man, for the benefit of all mankind.
And since Jesus isn't spending an eternity in hell, he's not there serving anyone's sentence.
Jesus became one of us when he took on flesh and emerged from the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Jesus permitted himself to be put to death in order to allow Satan to destroy himself, in the process.
God the Father was pleased with Jesus' work, so he raised him up from the dead and appointed him as the new head of all mankind.
An authentic human being now reigns at the right hand of God the Father, in heaven.
Hence, the whole concept of "substitution" is bogus.
Jesus is a real human person, in addition to being God.
Because he is man, the grace Jesus obtained for us accrues to the benefit of all mankind.
Because Jesus is God, the efficacy of that grace is infinite and eternal.

Depends on your meaning of explicitly..Jesus said he would fulfill the prophesies of Isaiah 53...Jesus said he was the only way to the Father...Jesus foretold of his death being his purpose.. Jesus said I and the Father one and no one comes to the Father but through the Son ...Jesus said I am the living Manna from heaven.
jweston thats great! Yes I would say he couldn't have been more expicit than that...Yes he definitely did! Last supper.

When you give thanks for the communion what are you doing? You're thanking God for sacrificing His begotten Son on the cross for you and letting you partake of His flesh and blood.
Does it trans-substitute into Jesus' flesh and blood? I personally believe it is, in the spirit.

Yes he did. But it was done after he was resurrected and after he restored all things back to the earth.
