Lilly J has a good answer. There is a lot to add and we could sit talk shop all day about the military the branches and what to do and what not to do. Some experience the best time of their life and some the worst. We have choices throughout our life and choosing your beliefs, career or hair color is on you and your devotion. I have been in the Navy for nine years. I started at the bottom and worked my way up like most people out of high school do in any job. Yeah there are days I have to clean toilets, take out the trash, clean this or that, but we don't have janitors either. We are the military. I am in a technical field and will always be in this field because of a specific area of defense I work with. I have seen many places and many different cultures. I currently live in Japan. I am free to work on my degree when I choose for the most part, it just requires more time because of my full time job. I have great benefits and I am financially stable, no debt. There are a lot of times I question what I do and whether it is enough, but I know that anytime there could be another 9/11 and that the next time will be much much worse. So that is why I do what I do, because of what I now know. I know because I am here doing it and not talking like I know when I didn't do anything. You can go to college and be successful, you can go to the military and be successful and you can drop out of high school and be successful. Your life is only as successful as you make it to be. So MAKE IT.

It all depends on your job in the branch you pic. My husband works on helicopters and the closest he will be to action is in Bahrain, but if you become a navy corpsman, you will more than likely end up near the front lines at some point or another.
YES you get under paid!!!! Any job that you only get a grand a month for(starting pay for an unmarried E-1) that you can DIE for is grossly underpaid! But you don't join for a paycheck, you join for honor and country.
You have no choice where they send you. YOu can make a wish list, but it is just that, a wish list. Meaning I wish I was here, but they sent me there.
YOu will get good money for college and if you work hard, you can get a degree, but you will not get a lot of sleep 'cause you will work a full time job that can call you in whenever it wants, then have to go to school in your 'free time'.
All military jobs are dangerous. You can die at any point, but some times the death is a preventable one if you pay attention to your surroundings.

Well, if you abhor the possibility of even going to war, don't join. You take an oath. I know it is hard to believe in this day and age, but some people actually take oaths seriously. War is a part of the military life, it is ACTUALLY what they exist for. But if you would rather not be shot at,( I don't like it either, but hey, I joined to be a combat soldier), the Navy is a good deal, so is the Air Force. Most jobs in the Army, believe it or not do not engage in direct combat.

There is alot of fun to be had in the the navy. There is also alot of hard work. I was a seabee for five years and there was three times when I was less than 48 hours from mounting out to the sand box, but never went. Sound to me like you should join the coast gaurd, and serve your country however they to are in the sand box also.

Who wants to be a squid???
Salt water showers. Small rooms. Low doorways. Do ya love the smell of AV Fuel in the morning. Ever been way out in the middle of the sea in a storm? Pray to the stainless god??? Could be stuck doing something below deck and never see the light of day. Marines get their ride to glory on those ships so a lot of above applies. Sure there are girls in port. Nothings free though.
The Army can intro you to the charms of cute young girls in several fun places. Blondes, brunettes oh my. Korea, Germany, Italy oh yeah.
Never mind your not packen what it takes. Enjoy College!

wrong. there are TONS of Navy in the sandbox right now, and many of them them were voluntold. in fact even 'safe' ratings such as YN are deployed over there.
you don't get to dictate when and where you deploy to. you go where the Navy tells you to go. doesn't matter how badly you want to go to hawai'i, if there are no billets for your rating when it comes time to choose orders, you don't go to hawai'i.
and you can't be a full time college student and join the Active Navy. Now, if you are going reserves, it's another matter entirely.. but you STILL run the risk of being deployed, even while in school.

Navy ships sink, Air Force planes crash, Marines and Army troops get shot. Take your pick. You don't need to be even THINKING about joining the military if your safety and comfort are paramount. Sheesh!

I was an army brat and from what I learned. if you don't want too much action the air force--navy--army---marines. in this order. the marines are always the first ones out to be killed. My son who is 23 went into the navy after graduating. there is sooo much crime and gangs on the ships in the navy. the air force is the quietest branch.
