It is permissible to drink as long as you don't get drunk, but I don't believe that it is a good thing to do.
How much alcohol do you need to be drunk? I'm not talking about American legal limits, but to the point that alcohol begins affecting your actions, judgement, etc. From the very first drink, you are more drunk than you were without.
Look at all the havoc that drinking has caused in our society. I know of no good that is accomplished by drinking alcohol.
Scripture also warns of doing anything that might cause someone else to stumble. If you are a Christian and someone sees you drinking and figures it must be OK, goes ahead and drinks, is affected and something bad happens, it is on you. I wouldn't want that on my conscience.
I am a former alcoholic. I have not consumed any alcoholic beverages since 1980, and don't feel I have missed a thing (except a few hangovers). I have a clear conscience and a clear head.
I don't judge anyone who believes it is OK for a Christian to drink socially without getting drunk but, for me, I believe there are a whole lot more good reasons for a Christian not to drink than there are reasons to drink.

People will tell you that Jesus drank wine. What they don't seem to say is that the word "wine" in the Bible was translated from the Greek "oinos" which can be translated to mean wither fermented wine or just plain 'ol grape juice.
During the wedding at Cana, Christ turned water into wine, but the governor of the feast compliments Jesus on keeping the "good" wine until last. At a time when there was no refrigeration, this likely means the "wine" Christ served was fresh grape juice. Not something that had been spoiled.
Christ set the example for us. No alcohol.

Only when alcohol becomes medicine its right to consume. Alcohol damages the brain and nerveous system. But 30 ml a day may do good for the body. But if we fall into temptations then we jus get drunk.
When we know fire burns us, then would we toch it. So is alcohol we have to handle it very carefully else it will handle us.
Biblically or non biblically temptations are always temptations.

But now I have written to you not to keep company with anyone named a brother, who is sexually immoral, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or an extortioner--not even to eat with such a person. 1 Cr 5:11
From this "my" interpretation is that the Bible looks down on drinking excessively. Since I don't want to cross the line, I abstain from all alcohol. Also, in response to one of the other comments. There are no levels of sin, even though we wish there were. ALL sin is the same in the eyes of God and ALL can be forgiven if they truly repent.

"Biblically," yes as most of these peoples were drunks anyway, but "spiritually," NO. For many centuries peoples drank beer or wine because of the fear of drinking contaminated water, which has killed millions throughout the span of time. If you are trying to find an "excuse" to drink without feeling remorse for it, in MAN'S doctrines you won't find much which "allows" many to feel guilt for doing much of anything for mankind has always found a way around God's rules in one way or another. Abstinence of anything which will harm the temple of God is recommended, and if you must find an excuse to drink do it in moderation not as a drunkard.....

--NO DRUNKENESS is condemned in the Bible as a serious sin!
(1 Corinthians 6:9-10) “9 What! Do YOU not know that unrighteous persons will not inherit God’s kingdom? Do not be misled. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men kept for unnatural purposes, nor men who lie with men, 10 nor thieves, nor greedy persons, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit God’s kingdom.”
--ALSO HEAVY DRINKING can also lead to more series problems:
(Proverbs 23:30-33) “30 Those staying a long time with the wine, those coming in to search out mixed wine. 31 Do not look at wine when it exhibits a red color, when it gives off its sparkle in the cup, [when] it goes with a slickness. 32 At its end it bites just like a serpent, and it secretes poison just like a viper. 33 Your own eyes will see strange things, and your own heart will speak perverse things.”

It is quite clear in several verses that you may drink but avoid getting drunk. There are quite a few passages that say we may drink wine or beer but the drunkards are to be avoided and better knock off the abuse because it leads to alot of other sins.

Drinking is fine, when done modestly. Yet, getting totally drunk is a mortal (serious) sin and getting semi-drunk is a venial (less grave) sin, but a sin nonetheless.
