A Montessori school is a school based off of Maria Montessori's principals. Rather than being taught by a teacher at a chalk board, you have 'materials' that you use with your hands that teach math, language, history, pretty much everything. Starting when they are young, they go on lots of field trips, and the number of field trips grows throughout the years. Maria Montessori believed that children should get out and learn about the real world. And when kids hit middle school (7th and 8th grade) they learn how to become independent, and go on longer, overnight trips withought their parents. Maria Montessori believed that middle schoolers should go away or months to live and work on a farm. But now, as far as I know, most schools only go away somewhere for about a week.
So, basically, Montessori is just a totally different way of teaching. Lots of kids who are gifted, and kids with special needs attend Montessori schools, though they are open to any kind of people.
I hope this helped!

Actually, I used to go to a Montessori school. I went starting at age 3, ending at age 12. (I'm 13 now.) It's a school invented by an italian woman named Maria Montessori. You know how in a normal school you sit at desks and listen to teachers? That's not how Montessori schools work. You move freely around the classroom, and make work choices on the shelves. It's a good thing Maria Montessori was born! If she wasn't, I wouldn't be as smart and talented as I am now. :)

Montessori is a method of teaching. Maria Montessori came up with the idea. She believed all children are "teachable", they just learn in different ways. It is not designed for "gifted" nor "special needs" children, but for ALL children. Children are taught using as many senses as possible. You can "see" the number 10, "hear" 10 beans in a jar, "feel" the number 10 made of sandpaper, "smell" 10 flowers vs. 1, etc. Also, children are taught in multiple grades at the same time. Our school had pre-K & K together, 1st-3rd together, and 4th-5th grades together. Children are not held to their grade level, they can progress as high as they want. If the teacher runs out of K material, she brings in 1st grade material, etc. The younger ones may learn from the older, and vice vs. They are taught to think things through & try everything using their own resources before asking for help. They are also taught public speaking as well. And, peaceful resolutions to conflict. They are not always taught at the same time unless it's a "lesson" on how to do something specific. The children are working independently of each other in the same classroom (at different levels). This is just a snippet, google it or click on some of the links others have provided. Hope this helps:)
