A Progressive Evangelical- Tony Campolo
What's a 'Red-Letter Christian'?
Jesus is neither a Republican nor a Democrat. That's why we created a new name for our Christian political movement.
Because being evangelical is usually synonymous with being Republican in the popular mind, and calling ourselves “progressive” might be taken as a value judgment by those who do share our views, we decided not to call ourselves “progressive evangelicals.” We came up with a new name: Red-Letter Christians.
By calling ourselves Red-Letter Christians, we are alluding to the fact that in several versions of the New Testament, the words of Jesus are printed in red. In adopting this name, we are saying that we are committed to living out the things that He said. Of course, the message in those red-lettered verses is radical, to say the least. If you don’t believe me, read Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7).

I'm an old beatnik with a Christian-eclectic background, so "red lettering "works for me. However it does not work for the Jesus Society. This group of liberal theologians attributes very few NT passages to Christ. They go thru the gospels and selectively pencil them out. Of course this helps boost their academic prowess. Does this sound to you like the old "how many angels are dancing on the head of a pin" adage? Too much talk, too little action.

I have never heard of this...I am a red state republican but red letter....the words of Jesus are in red in the Bible..maybe it just means a Bible believing,,,,left leaning republician....cause I can assure you....those two issues will always be hot button issues with Christians that I know. You can do good till you die but if you don't accept the word of God as truth....all of it....you are just a willow in the wind.

I think it means you believe the bible contains actual words spoken by the Jesus-guy. Just to make it easier, they're printed in red.
MY question always is -- who was there with the Dictophone gear?
