You would definitely want to start out simple and slow and get the basics, such as milk and bread and eggs, a selection of vegetables and fruits, and probably some frozen dinners for a start. Also, cheese is good and having bacon around would be great for sandwiches and breakfast. You would need some condiments (pickles, mayonnaise, mustard, etc.), and also butter. Don't forget your salad fixing's and maybe toss in some potato chips and chip dip for the munchies. You wouldn't be buying these on a weekly basis unless you eat a lot and/or need to pack your lunch for school or work.
Make a menu list first and then go from there. Keep it simple, but nutritious, and include your fruit and veggies, that way you'll have a variety. For one person, you'll not require much, and you'll need to remember that some things you buy will last you for months; such as toilet paper, laundry detergent, cleansers, etc.).
Look at the store's ads for sales and be a smart and frugal shopper. Use coupons if you can for the things you buy, however, I realize that quite a lot of coupons are not available for the items that I buy, so then I compare other brands for the best deal. And, sometimes I shop at several places. The Dollar Store is good for laundry/bath items and you can save a bundle there come time to purchase those items. Being thrifty and frugal and on a budget, will not only help you become a more responsible shopper, but also a smart one, too.

The most common things I buy are 5# ground beef, loaf of bread, butter, milk, half and half, eggs, canned veggies, CHEESE, green onions, salad mix, red onions, potatoes, and whatever other veggie I'm in the mood for that day. Oh, and 2# jars of minced garlic. We go through garlic so fast in this house!
