i have a cat, Baast, and a dog, Scooter, that i swear i feel like i've known my whole life, yet they've just recently come into it. why do i feel this way? what's behind this feeling,and is it common?

our dog Scooter acts just like a dog we lost about 2 yrs ago. his name was Hazmat.

My big male German shepherd acts so much like my first shep that it's scary sometimes. Cody was a search dog, and if I was sick or upset, he'd come in every ten minutes to check on me. He wouldn't leave until I told him that it was OK. He had a whole bunch of other quirks, too.
Now Sam does the same sort of things. He's got to check on me, and if I don't tell him it's OK, he won't leave me alone. Cody was a grey sable and Sam is a black and silver, so they look somewhat alike, too. And when I look into Sam's eyes, sometimes it's just like looking into Cody's eyes.
They could easily be twins in the way that they act and respond. Even my husband has slipped and called Sam "Cody!"

Yes, I know what you are talking about. I adopted a dog from the pound less than a year ago. The minute I saw him, I felt some kind of connection....like he was meant to live with me. Even though he hasn't been my companion for long, it still feels as though he's been in my life forever.
I think part of it is that you can sense other living thing's "personalities," for lack of a better word. You are drawn toward the ones that are similar to yourself. Same thing applies with your human friends. :)
