Your budgie won't hop on your finger yet because it's still afraid. Give it some time to get used to you and the new surroundings. I have one that I bought about three weeks ago and it's just now starting to chirp. They need to get conditioned to the new house and family. They do become great birds if they are allowed to settle into their new homes. Give it some time and then start working with it. Birds don't normally hop on fingers but have to be taught to do these things. A budgie can be taught to talk too if you have enough patience. One thing the book didn't tell you is that the birds they talk about are trained to do the things they describe, this takes time and patience. The best thing I can tell you is talk to it every time you get the chance and work with it. Don't work too long with it or you could exhaust it. And don't stick anything other than your hand in the cage. Birds can have heart attacks easily and hands or other objects can kill the bird. You need to move slowly so you don't scare the bird to death. And talk quietly to it to calm it down. Work with it and whistle to it and this will make it your friend and companion. Training a bird takes a lot of time, caring and patience.

Do not liet the bird fly around your house. I guarantee it will one day accidentally fly away.

IF this bird was hand raised, it will begin to like you. Give it time to get to know it's new home, the sounds and smells, etc. It flew across the cage because it is afraid of YOU.

Slow down. Sit near the bird while you read (??) or watch TV. Talk gently to it - for a few weeks. Let it see you are NOT a threat. Let the bird choose you as a friend. Be patient and do not push the bird.

Wait and you will have a great little friend.

Fisrt comes trust. Then you can put your finger under the budgie's belly push up and he will step onto it. Also be sure to clip their wings.(having a vet do it is better and I suggest you do that). It insursesthere safety. My aunts budgie flew into a fan once and was killed. So this is one of the most important things youlle do for any parrot. Cliped wings insure tamer calmer pets too.Secondly, i hope the book your reding doesn't say to feed seeds if so, the correct diet is pellets, fruits, veggies, egg food, and seed as a treat only. Good pellet brands include Zupreem, Kaytee Exact, or Harrisons Bird Food. Reasarch them all on your computer. And remember DONT feed grit or gravel. People who say PARROTS in particular need grit have old rusty information. Grit should only be fed to finches and canaries and can make it IMPOSSIBLE to digest a thing. This results in sudden deaths in parrots. Also people say that grit has calcium. Just give cuttlebone.
Remember witrh that type of care your budgie might live to be 10 to 15 years old. Pretty long if new care tips are used.

First you need to let your bird adjust to his new surroundings, which may take a couple of weeks. You have to be really patient. At the moment your bird is very scared,he needs to learn to trust you. YOU have to show him you mean him no harm before he accepts that. Be around your bird often,as much as you can, talk to him gently, make NO attempt to touch him or pick him up yet. Once your bird has adjusted to his new home/you THEN you can start training him. Place your hand inside the cage, keeping it very still, talking quietly/gently.If he hops on your hand,do nothing. Make no attempt to do anything else. Repeat this daily till your bird accepts your hand. Then you can start to finger train him. Place your hand in the cage, move your hand very slowly towards your bird,GENTLY press (very lightly) your finger against your birds tummy saying "up". This may take a while, but eventually he will hop onto your finger. All training takes TIME and PATIENCE. Always treat your bird with care, always speak slowly/clearly. Never force your bird to do anything. With time, patience, love and care, you will be rewarded...

righto... your budgie is still getting used to his new home and new owner. Leave it for a awhile and just speak to him and give him treats such as greens and a slice of apple to start with.

When he's settled put your hand in slowly with your palm facing down. Move your hand close to his feet and let him walk onto your hand. If he doesn't move or flies away just try again another day.

when he finally walks onto your hand just let him sit there comfortably for now. After doing that for awhile move your hand over and let him sit on your finger,

When he knows that you are not going to hurt him he will be used to you enough to eventually to be taken out of the cage if you are allowed by your parents..

REMEMBER ALWAYS to have the doors and windows shut .If you leave his cage door open he might even fly back to his cage.and go in on his own.

One thing is DON'T rush it and you will have a lovely bird who will love you and do tricks for you. Slowly does it

Good luck

well just give it a lot of time....
When i bought my cage of budgies....all of them didnt become my friends.. but one of them did to the whole family lol. After a while i put my hand in the cage slowly...i think it tried to avoid me at first but i kept my hand right there calm and still and closed up on him....then i think i petted him with my finger on the head and body...and he liked it. Then...i put my finger near his toes and he just climbed on lol. Then he was so friendly that he used to sit on my shoulder, head, bedpost(with me on the bed), finger etc. He learned to fly back to its cage when in his sight...sometimes i used to toss him in the air and he flew back to his cage. He used to chirp comfortably when he was sitting on me or my mother etc. He was the cutest fuzziest little thing ever. lol.
i was 14(Now i'm 17) at that time and i wasnt a bird trainer... guy. Except i was experianced with pet birds..and i had two parrots in a cage at the time also.

This bird has got to get used to your house before it will be your friend. Don't terrorize it by chasing it around and let it fly around, this will make it take longer for your bird to like you. Please visit this website and read the "new bird" section and the "shy" section. These should give you easy steps to follow to make your budgie your new best friend.
