My buddy has a 1991 Ford F150 pickup that no longer runs properly. It will start just fine with the clutch in, but when you release the clutch it grinds for a minute or so then the truck struggles and shuts off. It will not go into any gear. Any ideas of what would cause the tranny to grind to a halt when it is in neutral?

the presure plate has won out. if you start it in gear with the clutch in and breaks off does it still try to pull? if it does then you need to replace the clutch set. or the tranny could have a gear droped in it. try to roll the vehicle in nuteral and see if the motor still tries to turn over, do this with the clutch not depressed and the key off. if the motor turns ove then you need to replace the transmission

Bad bearings in the transmission. Time to replace the tranny.

Support bearing between input shaft and output shaft is seized, thereby locking the shafts together, this requires a complete trans replacement. It would cost to much to overhaul his present gearbox.

input bearing is bad, most likely. the trans needs to come out and get fixed, or replaced.
