After eating at a hotel's restaurant, I'm asked by the waiter if I want to bill it to my room and I agreed. I ate there 3 times and was never asked for any proof that I stay at the hotel. I'm only asked my room number.

There are many ways to do this, were you carrying a key? You don't say if you signed anything but most hotels make you sign and print your name, if you did, the second you turned the check in it was verified to check that your name and room number coincided. The last form is not to allow visitors and if they are allowed they are closely monitored. So if you are in the restaurant it is because you are staying in the hotel.

Wow lucky you! I don't think that would happen at just any restaurant or to just anyone. Maybe u looked like the type that would normally stay there, i.e business man at a business hotel or maybe u had your Hawaiian shirt on looking like a tourist at a hotel allot of tourist stay at.

You're lucky. The hotel restaurants usually ask to see your room key.

Could be someone working there who's good at faces and had seen you at the check-in, someone saw you put your key away as you entered, or maybe they're just careless. I don't think there's any way to do more than guess since we weren't there, sorry! Usually the places I've stayed at wanted to at least see the key at some point.
