my brother loves asking these types of questions so I thought i'd see what people here have to say about this question:

the questions is: When we die, the Bible says that we go to Heaven. Where in the Bible does it say that we go directly to Heaven? Where does it say that we go immediately to Heaven or hell?

His points: just because the thief on the cross was told he'd go directly to heaven (the next day) a day in God's time is not a day in our time.
he had another point but i forget it.

I'm not saying i believe this-i believe that we go either directly to heaven or hell but i'm very curious about other people's opinions.

After death we must all come into the presence of Christ our judge, 'so that each one may receive good or evil, according to what he has done." (2 Corinthians 5,10)

Those who die without perfect love of God will be purified in love in purgatory. We know that there is a purgatory because those who imperfectly love God when they die do not deserve Hell nor are they worthy enough for heaven; we also know from the Church's constant teaching about the value of prayers for those in purgatory.

Those who die in hatred of God will be judged worthy of the eternal punishment of hell.

The Last Judgment
The Last Judgment is "the hour when all who are in the tombs will hear the Son of Man's voice and come forth, those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of judgment" (Jn 5:28-29). Matthew's Gospel speaks of angels gathering all the nations, with those on Christ's right (the sheep) going into eternal life, and those on Christ's left (the goats) going into eternal punishment (25:31, 32, 46).

In the presence of Christ (Truth himself), the person's relationship to God will be laid bare. Everything will be revealed, the good that the person has done or has failed to do. Augustine portrays Jesus saying to the wicked, "You have placed nothing in the hands of the poor; therefore you have found nothing in my presence."

The Father will determine the time when Christ returns in glory. Through Jesus, the Father will then pronounce the final word of history, revealing the whole purpose of creation. Then we will see that his justice has triumphed over man's injustices.

Peace and every blessing!

FOR we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed with our habitation which is from heaven, if indeed, having been clothed, we shall not be found naked. For we who are in this tent groan, being burdened, not because we want to be unclothed, but further clothed, that mortality may be swallowed up by life. Now He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who also has given us the Spirit as a guarantee. So we are always confident, knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord. For we walk by faith, not by sight.

We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord.

Conclusion: When you die, you go directly to be with the Lord. No purgatory. No waiting period. No get out of hell free cards.

From my reading I haven't seen anything talking about going immediatley to a heaven or hell.

But what I have found is that in first peter it talks about christ going to teach all those on the other side of the veil.

If I have more time I'll come back later and put more

Just because you read something out of a man-made book, doesn't make it so. You accept everything you read as true? Have you ever contemplated the origin of the biblical tales? God gave me a brain, intelligence, and a sense of logic. I cannot simply surrender my whole being to a book whose authors are questionable, stories far-fetched, contradictory, and plain nonsense.

I believe that we don't go directly to heaven, because nothing impure can enter. Therefore, since humans are smothered in sin, saved souls must go through a temporary cleansing place, known as purgatory. Jesus removed the "nail" of sin itself, while purgatory removes the "hole"/effects of sin. Reason being is that it wouldn't be fair for a lifelong devout Christian and a repentant unbeliever on their death bed for both to go directly to heaven, I think its fair that the deathbed repentant "pay" a certain amount of longer time before entering God's kingdom. God bless

I keep mentioning the 144,000 and getting shot down for it. So, again 144,000 go to heaven. they are 12,000 from the 12 tribes of israel. A multitude of others goto the kingdom or paradise on earth. Jesus never told the thief he would goto heaven. he said the thief would be with him in the kingdom of Earth.

Good point. God might want to torment folks with uncertainty a bit longer just for the hell of it.
