Three words: Best of Luck.
For five hundred yards, anything from a .223 up will work (not counting a lever-action, flat bullet), although the .223 is really too light to get the job done at that range. A heavy .243 would probably be as small as you can go. As for quiet, they call them high powered rifles for a reason. I don't think that a silenced or suppressed weapon would have enough to go that far, and you would have to have a Class III FFL to have that anyway.

Id go with the 270 or the 308. you arent going to find a gun that is a centerfire and quiet, they dont exist. Both guns will have some drop at 500 yards, but if you have a good scope, then you can make a good long range rifle from either caliber. The 308 is a little more power than you need at say 100 yards, but it doesnt stay as powerful as when it left the barrel. IT loses velocity and stopping power, so if you really think you are going to shoot 500 yards. which isnt the best shot and really shouldnt be done, the 270 might not have the necassary stopping power, i dont know for sure, so id go with the 308.
P.S. the 22-250 is a varmint rifle and wont kill antything bigger than a coyote at a 150 yards, actually its illgal to use in most states for deer.

No sportsman is going to plan on 500 yard shots. Those that brag about them are good people for you to stay away from. I have and have used 6mm, 25 caliber, 6.5mm, 270, and even up to 8x68 (yes, even more overkill than 30-06), and for my money, I'd say the 7x57 comes close to being the perfect deer cartridge. Unfortunately, despite its near-perfect record of 115 years' use, it's hard to find in a new rifle, but the 7mm08 comes close. You could also burn more powder with something like 280AI, but I don't much see the point, if you can estimate range reasonably well.

I like WWDs answer. 7X57mm Mauser is my all time favorite rifle cartridge.
I don't really see whats wrong with the '06, any centerfire rifle of deer killing power is going to be pretty loud.
A .270 and .243 are also great rifles for deer, but still sound like a rifle when fired.
It's illegal in most states to hunt with a suppressor, so I say keep the '06, get a good set of electronic hearing protectors, Be realistic about that 500yrd thing, maybe 200. and enjoy the New England foliage.
What's wrong with assassination anyway, it's really what hunting is, unless you wan't to see the animal run away wounded. I'd rather they drop right where I shoot them.

Well, if you want an effective bullet at 500 yards you are going to need a substantial caliber, like some of the heavy .30 calibers.
It's been a long time since I was in the New England area (are you part of Canada yet?).
I suspect you would do well with a .243 or .270 in that area. Report is not all that loud and recoil is minimal.

22-250. It is the flattest shooting gun out there that if you hit a deer in a vital it will go down. I use it to hunt coyotes in the plains of colorado. Drops a few inches over 300 yards but has enough umph. It is a sweet rifle. Dude if your shooting at 500 yards then I dont think your that good of a stalker in hunting.
