How is it possible to say that this verse calls for terrorism?

Fight in the cause of Allah those who fight you, but do not transgress limits, for Allah does not love transgressors. 2:190

Look at the words. It says to fight those "who fight you". It says to fight only when somebody is fighting you. It doesn't say to whip out a weapon and start fighting for no reason. It says to defend yourself. It also says not to go overboard. Just defend yourself.

Can you please tell me why this is commonly quoted as a call to kill any unbeliever?

You have taken the meaning differently here.

The job of every Muslim on this planet is to establish the law of Allah to govern this land and to take Islam to every last person on this earth. Now the Ayah you have mentioned explains what to do if someone tries to stop you from doing your job, fight back.

Now the steps of fighting back that's more important to understand. Its not if someone tries to stop so just go ahead and kill him. No, it says if there is a resistance by word then fight it with word but with best behavior. (Rules of a dialog), and so forth until the resistance is in the form of killings, then you are supposed to take the your arms and kill the force that is against the Allah and his Messenger. But you cannot just wipe the enemies out even if they give up. (Rules of engagement & Prisoners of War rules).

War or armed conflict is resorted to as the last option if all other ways of a peaceful dialog has failed.

Islam is the perfect religion because it shows the follower from living his life to the end of his life and after. It covers every aspect of human life today from the rules in the house, economics, community to conflicts. So, if the manual for running modern man has rules of engagement that does not mean it teaches violence.

No, it is not a misquote.

Islam in Arabic does not mean peace but submission. If Muslims say they are a religion of peace let them explain the following.

In Sura 2:216, Allah, their God, is supposed to have said this to Muslims: "Fighting is prescribed upon you, and ye dislike it. But it is possible that ye dislike a thing which is good for you, and that you love a thing, which is bad for you. But Allah knoweth and ye know not."

Here we see some reluctance on the part of Muslims to fight; but Allah tells them, "I know what is good for you."

There are many Suras in the Quran, which prove beyond doubt that Islam is a religion of violence. Islamic Fundamentalists have used these teachings to justify their actions. Jihad is not a one-time event. It is a continuing operation until the entire world is converted to Islam.

"Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, … nor acknowledge the Religion of Truth, from among the People of the Book [Jews and Christians]" (Sura 9:29). Anyone who thinks we can achieve a lasting peace in the Middle East needs to have his head examined.

Muslims say that these Suras apply only during the time of Muhammad. But the Quran does not explicitly or implicitly say that. In fact, Islam divides the world into two houses: The House of Islam and the House of War. The goal of Islam is to dominate the world and Muslims believe they are justified in using violence to achieve this goal.

Of course, there are many Muslims who do not subscribe to the literal interpretation of the Quran. I have known many Muslims and I know the majority of Muslims just want peace and the well being of their families.

What Islam needs right now is a reform movement. There are many traditions and teachings of Islam, which are no longer relevant today. Women's rights and religious intolerance are just two, which come to mind.

Unfortunately, Christians are also guilty of sins against Muslims: prejudice, racism and fear. We are often separated from our Muslim friends because of them.

Still, we must witness to our Muslim friends about Christ, the Prince of Peace, whose love surpasses all misunderstandings.

Peace and blessings!

I don't think it does, but at the same time, I see how it could be used to justify terrorism - terrorists see the US (for example) as having fought them (by invading countries, by sticking their nose where it doesn't belong) - and so use that verse to justify their retaliation.

But I know what you're saying.

It is an intentional misquote. If Allah really says to kill all non-believer then why did he day the following:

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.

[109.1] Say: O unbelievers!
[109.2] I do not serve that which you serve,
[109.3] Nor do you serve Him Whom I serve:
[109.4] Nor am I going to serve that which you serve,
[109.5] Nor are you going to serve Him Whom I serve:
[109.6] You shall have your religion and I shall have my religion.

This is a slight translation misunderstanding.

"Those who fight you" is (understood) as those that "resist" converting to Islam. This is how I have heard this is used. First generations of converts may only submit and not have Islam in the heart truly but the following limited progeny are fully Muslim. History shows this at work.

You don't really expect a Muslim to answer you, do you? They are afraid of their radical pals. I would be too, if my culture held life at such a low priority. They think nothing of chopping off someones head...Americans, and the rest of the free world,,,just can't grasp this kind of evil cruelty. Even the IRAQ citizens seem to wallow in this kind of lust for blood. I don't think we will ever make them understand what freedom means. They are just too blood thirsty. Strapping bombs to children...what kind of evil minded person does this? Suicide bombers...such a waste of life..instead of trying to make a happy life for each other,,,,all they do is think up ways to kill each other...I don't understand them at all.

You are overlooking the fact that the Qu'uran also says:

4:91 "Take them and kill them wherever ye find them. Against such We have given you clear warrant."

4:101 "The disbelievers are an open enemy to you."

4:144 "Choose not disbelievers for (your) friends in place of believers. Would ye give Allah a clear warrant against you?"

5:51 "Take not the Jews and the Christians for friends. ... He among you who taketh them for friends is (one) of them."

8:39 "Fight them until persecution is no more, and religion is all for Allah."

9:5 "Slay the idolaters wherever ye find them, and take them (captive), and besiege them, and prepare for them each ambush."

9:29 "Fight against such of those who have been given the Scripture as believe not in Allah."

9:73 "Strive against the disbelievers and the hypocrites! Be harsh with them. Their ultimate abode is hell, a hapless journey's end."

9:113 "It is not for the Prophet, and those who believe, to pray for the forgiveness of idolaters even though they may be near of kin (to them) after it hath become clear that they are people of hell-fire."

9:123 "Fight those of the disbelievers who are near to you, and let them find harshness in you."

NOT that the bible is any better, since IT says:

"If thy brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son, or thy daughter, or the wife of thy bosom, or thy friend, which is as thine own soul, entice thee secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which thou hast not known, thou, nor thy fathers; Namely, of the gods of the people which are round about you ... Thou shalt not consent unto him, nor hearken unto him; neither shall thine eye pity him, neither shalt thou spare, neither shalt thou conceal him: But thou shalt surely kill him; thine hand shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people. And thou shalt stone him with stones, that he die." -- Dt.13:6-10
