Colds usually just have to run their course. Your immune system if up to snuff, should do the job for you. But for added help, if you're feeling congested take a decongestant and if you're coughing, take cough syrup. Basically just treat the symptoms, because the cure is already in you.

And taking zinc to boost your immune system, only works if you were taking it before you got the cold, because by the time you get enough zinc in your body to do any good, the cold has run it's course. But people attribute the zinc to this, when in reality...it wasn't.

Edit: Look at the guy below me, he read Bday as Baby. LOL BOB can't read! Sorry, I thought that was hilarious.

My best and rapid solution to the problem is: Massive doses of Vit C as much as 3,000 mgm supplements. Lots of rest and fluids. Try abstaining from ice cold drinks. Warm chicken soup. And lots of hot toddy- hot lemon juice with a touch of honey and a whiskey. bundle up and go to sleep. Take also some antihistaminics such as Chlortrimetron and Benadryl generic and OTC is fine. Antihistmanics will try up the sinus congestion fast. Rest is the # 1 therapeutic regimen.

I don't believe in letting any URI run its course as the others suggested. I have a lifelong hx of allergies and frequent colds. But taking Vit C and daily antihistaminics do work. a lot of my associates always compliment that I gave them the best advice yet. Eversince they start taking Vit C; they have less incidences of colds. Or if they have it ; the symptoms are not as bad and the duration is short.

By the way, I'm a nurse with many yrs of work hx in critical care unit . But i still believe in the old and true ways. Experience is the best teacher. Keep warm. After you perspire or sweat. post a good workout. Make sure you get those wet clothes off your body. Drafts and sudden changes in body temperature are common factors for colds aside
from virus of course. and of course, if you don't get proper rest and sleep; your immune system is compromised; making you susceptible to infection. So fortify yourself with lots of vitamins and minerals and proper nutrition.

Happy Birthday.!!!!!!! Many, many more milestones of happiness to come!!!!!!!!!!

Number one--you must be very careful if you take any kind of remedy, however insignificant, because it may have an effect on the baby.

Colds generally have to run their course. About all you can do is treat the symptoms, but with a baby coming, you don't want to put the baby at risk.

Probably the safest thing to do, although it won't make the cold go away, is to rest, drink lots of water, stay warm, and rest, rest, rest. You may want to get to a doctor who will listen to you and try to help. --many may ignore you, don't settle for that. Find one who will try to help and will if giving medicine, explain the risks.

A soothing mixture of honey and lemon in water, will help the throat, as well as gargling with warm, mild, salt-water.

Don't use anti-histamines, cold tablets, that sort of thing, without first talking to your doctor.

Go to the pharmacy and get a nasal rinse, somethign you actually have to use to rinse out your sinus cavity. Ask a pharmacist if you are not sure what one is. It sounds uncomfertable but it is really the only way to clear things out (unless you ahve a sinus infection, you might need to see a doctor in addition to it). Then get afrin or something to keep the swelling down. If it is allergies, take an allergy medication too. Dirnk a lot of water, avoid dairy.
