My sister was diagnosed in Aug. 1998 and passed away in Feb. 2000. She was very weak for most of her illness. I was kind to her and took care of her but the one thing I always wished I did was rub her back more. She rarely asked me, but I wish I offered more. Each person's illness is different, but they need our love. God Bless.

Maybe it would help your grandma to talk about her diagnosis with you. It might show her that you love her and are concerned. Be a good listener, be encouraging and positive. Then ask her how you can help her. Maybe she needs errands done if she has to go through chemo or needs someone to just visit her and watch TV together. Remember, she may not need you to solve her leukemia problem but may just like it if you spend time with her. Play cards, games, talk, laugh, etc.

Leukemia is a problem with the blood. It usually can be controlled with medication. I suggest you wrap your arms around her and tell her you love her and will be there for her. I am sure she is scared hearing she has leukemia. Ask your parents to explain what specifically your grandmother's illness means.

For more info about leukemia, check www.cancer.org and www.leukemia-lymphoma.org/ and www.marrow.org .

It will be helpful to know what kind she has. It will more than likely be AML or CML (acute or chronic myelogenous leukemia) There is also ALL and CLL. So knowing what type will make it easier to locate accurate information.

Google it and just start reading up on it. Meanwhile just be there for your Grandma. There's really nothing you can do to make her feel better so just let her know you're there if she needs you or just needs you to listen.
