When you ask someone's opinnion on something, say for instance Harry Potter... They say,"I am against the books" and you ask,"Have you ever read the books?" and their answer is no... How can they give you an opinnion based on something they have never read for themselves? Thoughts?

People make so many judgments based on hear say. Their pastor tells them something is bad and they don't question it at all. Its like they are so terrified of being lead astray they can't think for themselves.

I don't know how people do it, but they do it all the time. Maybe they hear someone else say that it's bad, or something. Humans have alot in common with lemmings, I think. To me, the Harry Potter novels are just that, novels. If the people who are putting them down want a harmful novel banned, why not go scream about say, "The Turner Diaries"? Now that was a scary book.

Yes, this really does annoy me. But we are the makers of our own destiny and have been programmed to believe what we are told from those in authority over us.

As children, the word of a teacher is gospel, not to be questioned. As adults, we should rise above that level of sponge intelligence and make a few decisions based on fact as we understand them.

Your friend should have said, while I have not read the books myself, I understand that they contain .... and it would tend to make one think .... While it is still a similar situation, at least you know up front what you are dealing with.

I've never read any Harry Potter. Now will I. I don't take the spirit realm or the supernatural lightly, nor do I think that playing with it...as these books teach...should be encouraged.
This is my opinion; which is my right to have.
I do not force my opinion on others. I have the right to not expose myself to something with which I disagree.

Considering that your question leans heavily on narrow minded people, think about this: Have you ever read Mein Kampf by Adolf Hitler. Should you if you want to say something about that monster? I don't think so.

I guess you CAN have an opinion based on principle. Now if you are in the receiving end of that opinion you should dismiss it on principle also and not give it any importance.

Same thing happens if you ask a question on a religion and they give you an answer like that. If you ask then if they have ever really looked into what that religion is all about, they say no. Ignorance is bliss in this world.

People, especially on here, do that ALL the time. Say anything about Wicca or Witchcraft and automatically we're all satanists. If people would actually take the time to learn about what they choose to rant on then this would be a MUCH more peaceful place-world.

I think you are trying to make an allusion to atheist's opining against Christianity. The flaw in your logic is that people do not gather regularly to convert the stories in Harry Potter into actions in their daily lives. There are many well read atheists who have read the Bible, there are also many atheists whose opinion of Christianity is based on their interactions with those who adhere to the Bible's teachings. How do you represent?

I don't have to jump off a bridge to know landing will hurt.

Having said that, I don't believe in commenting or judging things I have no knowledge of. I have seen too many empty-headed judgements by people rushing to judgments.

It's possible to form an opinion based on the opinions of other people you respect, or based on characteristics of the book.

For example, my wife doesn't like to read hardcover books. She might tell you she doesn't like a particular book she hasn't read because it's not available as a paperback. So she can have an opinion of it without having read it.
